I have a W/2000 W202 C250TD and I'm trying to work out the correct size socket for the oil filter cap.

I have a 36mm (too small) and a 38mm (slightly too big). Is there such a thing as a 37mm? Or is this a classic MB-only tool? :?

Any help would be appreciated!

There is a special tool available, looks like a very big socket with a 1/2" adapter, it's not an MB only tool as it fits some other cars too, the MB diesel ones are bigger than the MB petrol ones though. I do mine with a standard socket from my 3/4" socket set, cant remember what size but 36mm does ring a bell. Should not be too tight, so don't overdo it.

Thanks for the info.

When you say not too tight.... I know that "standard" oil filters on other cars should only be screwed on by hand (as the whole thing is the filter) but is the same true of the MB filter housing? Should it only be hand tight?

It needs to be tighter than hand tight, the new filter will come with a new O-ring so sealing should not be a problem. Just remember it is plastic so do not go trying to overtighten it.

It says in the Haynes manual what torque to tighten it to, cant remember off hand.
