Hello all,
about to dive into the world of MB for the first time, interested in your views and advice.
Couple of grand to spend on a "hobby" car, that needs to be usable daily.
Looking at an 89 230e,and a 93 220e, what should I look out for, what insurance group, what (roughly) mpg should I expect. Wife has an MX5,I have been running an old Rover 620 for the past year, any advice would be great............ oh yes,is a 190 a reasonable alternative?

If its a 'hobby' car and you have another car to use day-to-day, why not go back in time a little and consider a W114/115? You could easily pick up a saloon model, maybe a decent coupé at £2000. Sure, its not as comfy or easy-going as a W124 but there's something about old Mercs thats missing from modern motoring.....oh, and they're perfectly usable day to day too.

I'd agree with Paul.

I'd go a w126 SEC

Or a w123 pillarless coupe

Why not go for the mainstream classic, the W124 320CE?

Isn't it strange how the modern day equivalent, the 320 CLK, goes largly unnoticed?

I would agree that if you didn't need the car, day to day, then go for an older model. You can have eons of fun trying to sort out the problems and backed by this forum you have a huge resource of knowledge.
