First I must say hello to everyone.

I'm brand new to this forum but hope I can get some useful advice.

I'm looking to purchase a mid 90's (92-94) Merdcedes S350.
I have always liked the look of the car.

I have read some really good things about the S350 model engine and some really bad things.

If I decide to purchase this model vehicle what are the major things I must screen these cars for?

Considering that a well taken care of Diesels can last a long time, How many miles are too many miles for a nice used verision of this model car?

Congratulations for your good taste :D

Please note that early W140 series ( <1996 ) can exhibit some exbenzive problems:

- Aircon
- Wiring loom
- Rear windows regulators
- 350 diesel motor

I would suggest to find a late S300 Diesel with full MB service history. 3 litre motor stands with the durability standards of MB but 350 not. Please check carefully with a pro that every single bell and whistle in the car is working, otherwise be prepared to part with some considerable amount of cash when fixing them.

Here is the article covering the Aircon evaporator replacement, 22 hours job:

Yes, I would echo that the 350 turbo diesel is not at all as reliable as the earlier 3.0 normally aspirated, but 110HP from the 3.0 is not much for a big car.

300 turbo is later model than 350. 300 has 177 HP vs. 150 of 350.
