Well done on your purchase, a very nice starter car.

Hi,
Yes nice car not bad price either, but i have found that Mercedes performance parts are quite hard to get and can be very expensive (£500 for a good quality back box) i say that now but someone may say different.
When i started to mod my c230k i decided to only put subtle mods on it as others have said you could risk making it look taccy. Looks the same colour as my cars green/black metallic best colour IMO
I,d be interested in any mods you fit keep the forum posted on what you decide.
Congrats on the car very nice mate. :)

NIce looking car, but why mod it? I understand about changing wheels as that can be tasteful, but the rest? Please don't ruin a nice car. :(

Hello,

My first car was a Mini Clubman Estate in orange / red so a Mercedes as a first car.... cool !!

Agree with others, some AMG alloys and slight lowering would suit but watch out with the tints and other bits its a fine line before it will look chaved up.

Post pics when you get it / mod it

Cheers and welcome

Lowering will ruin the ride and make selling it on very difficult. Tints will make it difficult to reverse at night, and if you get the side-windows tinted then get ready to be bent over by the police. The exhaust - its a 2 litre engine - its going to sound like blowing a raspberry in a milk bottle - ****e.

I'm with you on the wheels though. :)

My advice - learn to drive first. And by that I don't mean passing a test - drive it on the roads and make your mistakes. Don't start by thinking your Nigel Mansell because you will crash it, and after you've spent your money on silly mods you won't be able to afford to repair it, or re-insure it.

If you want a fast noisy car, learn to drive safely, save your money for a few years, and buy something properly fast when you can afford it. Or don't buy the C200, and get something nice like a classic 500SEC instead, that will look very nice with tints :)

Good to see such and honest piece of advice

Regards,

Alex.
P.S. My first car was an Avenger and it cost £25, and I had it for 2 years.
No it's not a typo. Twenty five pounds in 1976

One bit of advice dont put to big rims on it because having bigger than 16 inch on a W202 (which is the car your getting) creates to much drag and makes the steering heavy and the car not feel like a merc.
Enjoy

17 eh?......

Mercedes?......

Unusual combination. Its taken me 58 years to work up to being a Mercedes owner, so very well done young sir. Congratulations.

I can remember my first car very well. It was a 1964 Hillman Imp finished in Balmoral Grey. Personalising a car in 1967 was not the same thing as it is today.
A couple of stripes over the bonnet, roof and rear, different wheel trims, fit a radio, and a sticky-on heated rear window panel was about the limit.
Nowadays there is just so much available. The trick is not WHAT to fit, its what NOT to fit that marks out a car well done and a car done with little taste.
There are cars driving around where the owners obviously have buckets of money but very little - or no taste. Range Rover and BMW owners spring instantly to mind.
Mercedes on the other hand is a marque that produces cars that doesnt accept modifications and personalisation well. You have to show a degree of restraint and taste. Its much better to spend the money available on just one or two things - but done WELL, than scatter the money around like confetti and do as much as you can, but nothing done as good as it could have been.
If I was you, all I would so is fit nice alloys and lower profile tyres. Quality ones. Ones that echo the quality of the car they are being fitted to. One other thing that would disguise its 1990 origins would be to ditch the ribbed glass headlamps and get some clear glass replacements.
And perhaps a new, more modern, aggressive style grille and perhaps a new back box with a tasteful chromed exhaust pipe. And that would be it on the outside.
Getting the windows tinted WELL is expensive and IMHO wouldnt do the car any favours. And as a previous poster commented, it would attract the attentions of the police which is not really what anyone wants. I certainly wouldnt muck about the suspension at all. Leave well alone if I was you. Unless of course you have a VERY rich family and can do it PROPERLY.
Maybe the ICE could do with updating. OK, thats fine, but no bins please! Decent door mounted speakers can give more than enough bass without it sounding like a yobs Nova going past.
All things quality is the key - and as I said, its not what you do, its what you DONT do that can make your car look good.
And just one more thing...........ENJOY ! ! ! ! !

Nice to see a young lad with some taste. Well done on your choice, I agree with others here keep the mods tasteful.
Some nice AMG 17 or poss 18 inch alloys with a polished rim will add some bling, the car colour is good and with proper paint cleaning and waxing it will look great, remove the bonnet star for the flat badge will give it some streamlining.
Dont tint the glass but remove all stickers from the windows so its clean. Possible debadge would look cool and only fit a chrome exhaust trim thats the size of the exhaust. Dont change the back box as you might actually lower the BHP by doing so.

Search the internet for images of the W202 to get some ideas.

hell, I started with a Lada! (Though I did have a nice new S class to drive when the old man wasn't looking!)

I'm astonished you can get insurance. All the 17 year old lads I know are struggling to cover the premiums on a 3 cyl corsa.
It all depends on what you want from the car. I've seen a lot of cars with tints recently. The problem is that as it's illegal to have them in the front, it makes them look live vans.
As above, mercs don't take well to cheap add-ons. Many were done up from new when the owners has serious money to spend so in comparison, cheaper end parts tend to look obvious. So, go easy and put the kinds of parts that at least look like they could have come from the dealer. Replica AMG wheels and spoiler for example.

Hi, Great first car, as another post said its taken me till 40 to finally get a w202 and have wanted one since 1993!
On the mods side try and keep it in line with the car, replica AMg's etc would be a good start as previously said, plus decent sound system, dont go OTT as the car looks classy already, far better than the usual 17 year olds in pimped up novas/corsa'S etc... enjoy your car.

Your car will look tasteful without mods... just keep it clean, well polished and tidy.
To me an immaculate original car looks better than the same car with loads of bolt on mods. Plus, on the day you come to sell it, a well looked after original car will command a better price.

... and please... no BIG tail pipe end!!

Good advice from Parrot of Doom too.
