What W number is my car

I see often see references to W124 etc on this site and wondered where these number come from. My C200 Elegance Auto (4 gears I think) is 1995 registered, so what W number is it?

How do you decipher the letter and numbers. What does it all mean, I'm intrigued?

is from Wagen, german for car. R is from roadster, german for English Sports Car.

It's just a chassis code like BMWs E39, E60 etc
