So here's my dilema. Yesterday my E220 was smoking like a steam engine, their was a little water loss but only about 500ml if that. However today I started it to take it down the road and it's fine, no water loss, smoke or any thing. To complicate things more my local dealer is closing down and can't/won't look at it, a new one isn't opening up untill 4-5 weeks leaving the only other places within thirty miles the Nottingham main dealer and two specialists who are all fully booked till mid August.

I wouldn't mind so much but this is the third major thing to go wrong since I've bought it in Feb. and the C-class I had before was just as bad. What's happened to MB quality. Luckly I've got my old faithfull '61 220SEb which has never failed me like all my previous W123s which makes me wonder if I'ld be best swapping the E220 for a earlier W124CE before all the computers and sensors which is alot of the problem or possibly even paying a little bit more insurance and fuel and going for a W107 280SL

Depends where you are in derbyshire, but Evans of Leicester have always been very good with us. (Also Monarch of Tamworth, if youre anywhere near that way)

Ive had a 1997 E220 Coupe and now have the same in a Cabriolet, has never let me down, spot on all the time so far. I have to admit, theyre not 123's, they have a lot more things to go wrong, but they are great cars, and the last of the real mercs....

I think there was a problem with weak cylinder head bolts STRETCHING !!with some E220 engines :( . See the www.honestjohn.co.uk web site plus the ubiquitous engine wiring loom problems :( :( . To be fair many of these problems only arise in high mileage examples at a point other marques might be heading for the breakers yard. These weak design points also stand out because so little else goes wrong with the 124 series. Ask any MB mechanic.
