Have Pirrelli 6000's fitted all round & fronts are scrubbing out.

Have seen lower prices on www.mytyres.com but would like to know if an asian equivilant to P-6000 is out there on a copied tread pattern & hopefully cheaper.

Always liked Uniroyal for rain & wet conditions grip on the Ovlov, but what are they like generally on the Merc.

Any comments good or bad please ..

Keith.

I put P6000s on my MR2 a few weeks before I bought my SL. It turned a stable car that handled like it was on rails, into a death trap :( The car broke away on a bend that I normally would take at 70mph I was doing 50 at the time :( the worst part was that my daughter was in the passenger seat. I just about managed to correct the loss and get the car onto the right sideof the road when a 18 wheel artic came flying round the bend  all in all the gap of error was about 2 seconds and we would have both been killed !

I have found that the uniroyal rainsports were very good on my T5 too (replaced p6000s) All of a sudden I could feel the road and the grip int the wet was much better. My MR2 had Bridgestone potenzas re05s and they were very good the CRV is on some form of Bridgestone too :) again they are very hard wearing and give a good performance in the wet.

I currently have continental sport on the SL and they have stood up to almost 24K of my idiotic driving so far, so I guess there will be another set of them soon :) and amazingly I have not even got close to spinning the car :)

*edit*

Sorry I did not see what car you have...

I personally would not skimp on tyres or brakes as they are the safety systems that matter most.

costco are good for tyres :)

Hi,

On my E320 it's Conti Premium for the summer and Conti TS810 for the winter. Oh and yes winter tyres do make a difference once it gets below 7 degrees.

I am surprised sometimes when people shell out 20 or 30K say on a car and then look for the cheapest unbranded tyre possible, why?

Tschuss.(bye)

perhaps it's because we're penny-wise

but pound foolish. The branding is unimportant really, it's the performance that counts. Not many of us have the patience to go through the tests on all the tyres ( except Pascal and David). So we end up with something branded because that tends to be what's on offer and stays in our memories.
I wonder what incentives, if any, the tyre makers offer the manufacturers to feature their tyres on their models. That has to be worth somthing in fresh sales, as most people when replacing one tyre, will get one exactly the same.
I went through a set of Contis, one by one like that, until I bit the bullet and went for four Michelins all at once. ( still have a conti spare, ought to change that as well by now)
I get a deal on Michelin at Costco, but am seriously considering the not so well known opposition for the next change. Not that much in the price, but the performance upgrade looks worth it.

I personally like goodyear tyres, they offer decent grip in dry and wet conditions, having said that i found uniroyal and continental equally as good for grip.but having worked in the tyre industry,my decision is also based on what witnessed of the charactaristics of tyres while working there, michelin hardest wearing, great for high milage drivers,ok amounts of grip, the 3 i mentioned give the best all round performance, perrilli's ok on grip, not to bad a wearing rate(greatly depending what car they were fitted to) but of all the major tyre manfacturers it was the one most prone to distorting, and delaminating.firestone great grip but way far to soft and wore to fast.
And here something alot of people aren't aware of,is that some of these copies, aren't actually copies but made by major suppliers themselves, been so long i forgot most of them, but one i remember is "lee conquest"..........sold as a budget new tyre but actually made by goodyear.would have the same pattern and rubber composition as the main goodyear tyre but sold at 1/2 the price, and yes they were actually dropped off by goodyear.and most tyre places wont divulge this information to the general public.

I hate paying a premium for the well known branded tyres and have over the last 5 years or so always replaced my tyres with Falkens (Japanese) which are half the price of Goodyears and are almost as good in my opinion.....lots of Porsche owners swear by them and a lot of people on track days really rate them for handling.

I've also run another car recently on Kumhos and they have been very good as well......I would class these as another mid-range tyre rather than budget.

can't remember the last time I was let down by a tyre (ignoring the US GP...)(and ignoring my puncture in the stratford triathlon...)

Contisports were sticky but didn't last too long. Dunlop / Michelin both been good performers to my surprise and lasted well.

Thats odd isn't it? Mine have done 20K (just with me in the last year) and were on the car when I got it. I would say that they had been on the car about 5K or so by then. I recon I have still got 2 mil left on them :D and Im not the slowest of drivers...

All the major manufacturers make economy, medium, high, and Ultra performance tyres. And these divisions are divided again with each manufacturer (ie Pirelli PZero Nero are much better than ordinary PZeros........Michelin Pilot Mxm, Pilot primacy, Pilot spot, Pilot sport PS2, are all different...... Goodyear also have Eagles, Eagle F1, Eagle F1 GS D£.). All these tyres are completely different.

The tyre you chose, depends on the car you drive, whether you want them to last longer versus roadholding. For my W124s, I did not chose ultras but a medium tyre. Had P6000s (okay?) P600s (okay) PZero*** (better).

I would not put those on an SL. When I bought the SL it was shod with Pilot Sports (amazing grip, but noisey and are wear fairly quickly). The new Pilot Sports PS 2 (much improved in wear and acoustics + better grip) or the Eagle F1 GS D£ will be my next choice. I see The P. sports PS2 have come down in price to £150, but the new eagle f1s are cheaper. The price I quote is for 245/45 17s. The Ultra Performance tyres are not made in small sizes, IE 195/65.

An amusing story re. tyres.

Many years ago 'budget' priced tyres began to appear here from the Continent, and one such brand name I remember was 'Englebert'. One guy and his cap came into my local garage and asked for a pair of those cheap new 'Humperdinck' tyres he'd heard about!

Speed rating h, Em 130 mph. That means at 130mph they are guarenteed not to disitigrate before 10 minutes of driving at that speed. Scary after 10 minutes.

I'd prefer a 20-30% higher rating than i'm ever going to drive at. Mine are Y rated, I think about 190mph.

Peter, that seems awfully heavy, my 500 comes in at 1770kg on the road - what have you been eating ?!! Yours should be about 1690kg

I don't hit 130mph very often, even if i do, i'd be lucky to keep it up for 10 minutes these days. Mind you, now that I have sorted out my wind deflector...

I have just purchased 4 x Pirelli P6000 for my C class estate. £295.00 fitted, inc VAT (2 different sizes?) which I have found handle well.

The original tyres from Merc have only lasted 18K but my tyre man said that was about right.I do mainly motorway driving but thought I should get a bit more out of them.

Is 18K about right?

Yes 18k is about right, all depends on the your driving style, where you drive.
But £295 is a bit steep, there are a lot of tyre companys like kwik fit that do specials like" lowest price guaranteed"...........check this out http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/reifenbestellen.pl?typ=D-102364&dsco=10
And thats what i would have expected to pay round here(possible might have got thema bit cheaper too),+VAT,fitted and balanced

Shrekky - Thanks for the website.

£295.00 was by far the cheapest price I could get for four good quality tyres with the bits.

My C Class has 2 x 205/55/R16 and 2 x 225/50/R16 - which come to £260.00 on Mr Tyre - so my £295.00 wasn't bad.
