Worth a read of this thread.

I have to agree with Blobcat about Mobil 1 being the best. However I have used Castrol Magnatec semi-synthetic with no problems, and last oil-change I used Motaquip Semi-Synthetic with no problems to date. I always use Motaquip in my other cars and thought I'd give it a go in the C280. Magnatec costs me about £35 (I think for 2 off 4 litre containers), Motaquip costs me £12.99 per 5 litre container. My C280 has just clocked up 100k miles with no problems so far, and I do all my own servicing.

I think that you could push this question around for a long time, the big firms out there offer some good products. As said Mobil 1 is what MB choose to use.

I think the question as put is quiet simple. However I don't know if the question asked is really the question that was meant to be asked, If you know what I mean. :confused:

Perhaps a better question would be;

For my 1998 C180 what do you think would be the best oil considering I do X miles per year, do all my own servicing and change the oil every X months/years. I intend to keep the car for X months/years.

Oh, if only all of the threads could be like that. One has to argue and fight on some to get the model of the car, and when it comes to the VIN thats something else.

That's the best!

But I use cheaper good quality oils as I've said before, and change it annually or every 9000 miles whichever comes soonest. Merc genuine filters are good value too. I get 10% discount from the main dealer by mentioning this owners' forum.

I am a stickler for good stuff in my motors

but I baulk at paying over the odds. Chevron 5w40 fully synthetic, about £12 for 4 litres at costco. At that price, you can feed it through your horse and put it on your roses, or alternatively, change your oil four times a year for the cost of an annual change with mobil 1.
