Hi everybody It's been a while to visit the forum but with time over Christmas I had a browse through, looking at visitors problems that I have experienced. I Still have a problem on my 1993 500 sl 68,000 miles with starting, having been left for a week or so maybe a few days. The car fires up straight away no problem even without touching the accelerator leave car running for about 15mins the car then starts to rev on its own slightly then fall back, does this a few times and then cuts out. Will not start for a good 15 to 20 min after. If you try and start the car as soon as it stalls it will pop splutter and backfire and eventually the engine will just turn over as if there's no combustion. If you drive the car straight away after starting you have the spluttering and pop and banging until you can reach a speed with the odd splutter until finally it clears. You can now relax as this car will be fine all day and the next until left for a few days. I must mention just in case you need to know the tick over is always slow as if it is about to cut out. I have not worried too much about this problem as I only use the car very little. This obviously is not the problem as your readers use their car all the time with this problem. As I have noticed quite a few readers have experienced similar problems. My car unless you tell me different has not got an OVP which seems to be the common answer to get replaced; I now notice that a CRANKSHAFT SENSOR may be the problem. For my information and other readers reading this topic what seems to be the one fix answer to this problem??? Thanks for taking time to read the above and hope you have trouble free motoring. If any readers wish to email me coowee@btinternet.com direct with any ideas to this problem please do so. I can then update my question on the forum.

I had engine cutout problem and it was the crankshaft speed sensor. FYI.
My engine would cut off at any speed, 80mph, 15mph or whatever. There
was no fix speed it would cut off.

Engine idle/stalling problems.

I have a similar problem and thought I too had no OVP relay but I found it today. It is where described, ie just behind the battery and to the right of the ECU. However mine was covered with a black plastic cover which when removed revealed the "silver OVP relay with 10 amp spade fuse on top" as described. Hope this may be of help if you decide the problem is there. If you fix it PLEASE let us all know.

Hi Dave:

I think you have 2 seperate problems like in my case. I think the OVP
will fix your car not starting for few minutes after cut off problem and
the crankshaft position/speed sensor will solve the engine cut off prob.
You have a SL500 and I have a C280. On my C280, the crankshaft
position/speed sensor is right next to the waterpump. It is black in color
with kinda round connector on the top. My OVP is located in the
engine compartment on the right side where all the electronics and
the diagnostic connector is. You will have to look around but should be
around where all the electronics is. I have seen people sell cd manuals on
ebay for these cars. Also, you can buy most of the parts on ebay and
online OEM suppliers lot cheaper. Shop around on several different web
sites before you order. You could end up savind quite a bit. Do a google
search for the sites. FYI.

Good luck.

Keep us posted,
Arv.

I sprayed WD40 in distributor and cap cleaned contacts in cap everything fine no problem. Reason I was told that the distributor collects moisture and condensation is developed which in effect shorts out the contacts the WD40 prevents this. If this helps solve your problem let us know.

Engine cutting out problems

I am still trying to solve the problem of our C220 cutting out. After reading these posts, can someone please tell me what a OVP is?

Thanks
KC
