I have just had the oil replace with Mobil 1 which it probably just as costly as gold but I think worth it.

on my w220, s320cdi Mobil 1 TD 0w-40
on my w124 e200 Mobil 1 0w-40

Dont think you can beat Mobil 1, althought many dealers now use castrol slx (i think its because there is no longer a sponsohip with F1 or perhaps they can make more money on slx...who knows) I always use and provide Mobil at service time regardless.

My personal feelings are ' with Mercedes - Mobil 1, but with BMW castrol. It has to do with the type of engine and how they operate with different viscosities. And if your thinking of car racing only Mobil 1. Its the only oil (for me) that can hold its viscosity under serious temperatures.:-|

As an after thought, I might add that I also work with Porsche car racing and all 911 are oil cooled, ie there is no water cooling. These type of engines run best on Mobil 1. Im not advertising for them, but i know how effective their oils are.;) h

Used to use Millers fully synth. in my golf. Would consider it again for the C220 when /if I start to do my own servicing!

I've got Motul MB Specific 229.5 (it's 5W30) in my C270CDi at the moment. Seems OK.

I used Mobil 1 TD in my van until the engine blew up(not oil related, probably) and the new engine has had its first oil change using Millers trucksynth 5w30 fully synthetic. Used to use 3-4 ltrs of mobil 1 in the 22k oil change intervals but 8k in this time and the oil level has not yet dropped to the half way point so it looks instantly better on oil consumption using the Millers and this in an engine that is theoreticaly not yet fully run in.

Well, the engine is new - so you're not really doing a direct comparison!

Also, how much is oil is used down to the halfway point? If it's a litre, over 8K miles, then that's not significantly different to what you were getting before.

I used to stage rally a Lancia HF Integrale tuned to 300bhp. The only oil it ever saw was Mobil 1. Three times the engine was dismantled for one reason or another, cam changes etc. but never through component failure, and engine wear was never evident at all, and this thing constantly buzzed at 6000-7000 rpm at full boost pressure. The only thing that got hot were the brakes!!...IMHO Mobil1 is class. ;)

I'd rather use a cheap oil (but to a top spec ie 'sl' ) and change it every 5000 miles than use mobil 1 sitting in the engine for 30000 miles like some folk do!.

I second that! (Mainly because for me cheap oil = free oil!)

I tend to change every 10,000 miles although it could probably run to 20,000 easily on semi-synthetic. To my ears, at 10,000 miles or thereabouts the engine is louder at idle, and I don't really like that :)

5000 miles is only necessary if you're using mineral oil IMO. Use a fully synthetic instead.
