Went to have 2 new tyres fitted today at national chain. Had uneven wear on tyres so had alignment checked.
when I picked it up the guy asked me if it had been in a crash as tracking was way out. (Only symptoms were uneven wear drives solid.
I said no but have hd most of suspension arms and bushes changed.
On setting off after about 200 yards there was a strange metallic rattle and the warning light came on and a notice saying ESP not functioning see manual.
Drove it straight back and they said it was because tracking was so far out. So they reset with diagnostic pc.
Off I went again, same problem weard rattle then the light and message, went back and they re set again and said because they did so much adjustment that suspension had to resettle back which I thought was bull ****.
They also said that because of all the adjustment that steering wheel is no longer central and that when I came back for the tyres ( I ordered run flats and they advised against) they would re do tracking. Again I thought that wasn’t right.
set off again same thing happened, took it back and they then re did tracking and all now seems OK.
Any thoughts?
My own personal thought is that he cocked up the first tracking and got it so wrong on the calibration he had to move it so much that my steering wheel was out of true.
Your more knowledgable opinions would be appreciated

The suspension arms and bushes definitely need tightening when settled in, hence to be done on a very level surface.

Did they remove the steering wheel and move it some splines to get it straight? This is the most common mistake that gives what you describe. Some cars you can do this, Mercedes you cannot. The steering angle sensor part of the esp will not tolerate it. It must all be adjusted at the track rod ends. My suspicion is that they did move the wheel, and eventually realised their mistake. The perils of fiddling outside of the independent specialists.

I was there for a lot of the time, don’t think they touched steering wheel

Having work done on suspension arms and bushes always puts the tracking/aligmnemt out. Whenever I get such work done its always off to the tyre place after for alignment check.
