I have recently had new front tyres fitted to my 2004 C220cdi There is an extremely slight knocking through the steering between 55-60mph (and the fact that it is so slight makes it all the more annoying) I've been back to kwik fit and had all 4 wheels rebalanced but without success - any ideas would be very welcome

If it has only happened after the fitting of the new tyres, then it must be a balance issue, your description fits the bill.

Kwik fit are famous for not using enough/any tyre soap when fitting tyres. If balancing does not sort your problem, have a very close inspection of the area where the tyre meets the rim all the way round, on both sides. You are looking for any eccentricity of the tyre with the rim. If insufficient lubricant is applied, the tyre can settle off centre when it is inflated to seat the bead.

Hope that reads OK...

Wheels

Hi

What brand are the tyres?

For one of the wheels, would all the bolts be the same weight ?

Time for getting the wheels balanced while on the car if possible !!!

Thanks for thr replies guys. I guess I should track down someone a bit more specialist than the kwik fit lads - in fairness I've not had problems with them before, but strangely each time they rebalanced the wheels they found that they were out - despite having balanced them a week earlier!
I live near Ilkley so Nottingham's a bit out - there's a good indie in Skipton called Mercspec - I'll ask them unless anyone knows of anywhere else?
Incidentally the tyres are Goodyear Eagle NCT
thanks again, Phil

I had a similar problem with my 211. It was resolved by having the wheels dynamically balanced. I understand that this machine is more sophisticated than a normal balanceing machine that Kwick Fit would use. Apparantly it puts a lateral load on the wheel.

I discovered that only some MB dealers have this equipment

Steve

Hi I also had my wheels balanced at Kwik Fit it was a disaster, Iwas talked into getting my tracking done as well also a disaster . They need to be done at Mercedes as they weight the car down and do the cambers toe in and toe out which kwik fit dont and cannot do. Kwik Fit also told me I needed new pads ,new wheel bearing ,new flexipipe, new discs, new antifreeze, new tyre Ihad the car checked at mercedes and all it needed was a wheelbearing adjustment Will not be going back to kwik fit. I have found a great inde in Busby (Glasgow) called Mainly Merc owner Brian Melville is very very helpful and gets the work done.

I have had continuous wheel balance problems. I am going to try having them balanced while still on the car - the old fashioned way. Theres a place not far from me that does this.

If you google 'wheel balance problem' its an issue that affects all large vehicles, and balancing while on the car is a common solution. After all, if the centre hole isn't perfectly centered on the wheel hub, theres no point in balancing around it.

Wheel Balance problems on my V-Class were down to the front wheels being buckled (from new). Merc couldn't find the problem a local tyre dealer Tyremen in Hull spotted the problem when i took it in for on-car balancing

Hello Janice
I've only used them twice - once for this job and a few months back they fitted after market parking sensors for me. On each occasion they have done what I asked for (well) & stuck to the quoted prices - no complaints at all. Also on little things - I work in Skipton a couple of days a week and they are very happy to give me a lift back into town (they are a mile or so towards the ring road) and come back and pick me up when the car is ready.
If you saw my other post on the general discussion board, they are the folk that I am considering for all my future maintenance work, especially when the warranty is up in November. On that point I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has anything else to add.

Thanks for the reply Phil When I spoke to them they said the would provide a loan car (for £5 to cover the insurance) whist my car was in for the service.

Can I ask how what the cost of your rear parking sensors was. Did they do a neat job. I was thinking of having some fitted. I was a bit wary of aftermarket fitment. Thought it may look a bit DIY ?
I also talked to a firm near Bacup May be a bit far for you I think it was called "the garage." Original name! I have heard some good reports about them.

Hello again
the sensors ( 4 at the rear - bleeper only - no lights )cost 250 & I reckon it's one of the best things I've ever done
They asked for the paint reference number from my service book to ensure a perfect match (not just the colour name) - very professional I thought
The match is excellent and they fit the bleeper inside one of the rear speakers so nothing is visible inside the car
Incidentally it has 3 volume settings and they normally put set it to high which I found a bit intrusive, so I took out the spreaker grille and reset it to medium - you just have to remember that if you have music blaring you'll need to turn it down a bit when parking
let me know if you do use them & how things go service & price wise

Thanks for that! I'll have the service done then give it some thought. I'm swallowing hard at the price of the service I'm having the gearbox oil changed in addition to the A service.
