Wheel balancing - counter weights

I have a Mercedes '04 reg C220 coupe with nearly 80,000 miles on the speedo. Recently I had 4 x new tryes fitted to the car and have seen that on the 2 rear tyres there are approx 11 counter wieghts inside the wheel rim and the RH driver side there are about 4.
Can anyone explain why up until now there have been no counter weights, and suddenly there are so many?

The same brand and type of tyre have been fitted to the car all its life.

Thanks

probably its been balanced by someone who doesn't know what they are doing and half the weights are there to counter the other half being incorrectly fitted. If it needs that many there is a problem somewhere, that needs attending to.
I had mine balanced with new tyres, wasn't happy and got it checked elsewhere. They'd left all the old weights on and simply added more (and even then it was way off). They took the lot off and rebalanced with just one small weight which was all that was needed.

There are also markings on the tyre that shows the heaviest side that should be lined up with the correct part of the wheel

I agree with jberks - sadly there are too many people out there who either don't know what they're doing and / or don't care - which is worse
The last time I got tyres fitted the balance was miles out and I took it back twice to have it fixed - each time the same place found that the wheels they'd balanced a few days earlier were strangely out and fitted more /new weights, but it was still wrong
eventually I gave up & took the car to a reputable garage who sorted it no problem - cost a few quid but sometimes life's too short for standing on principles
