Hi guys,

Looking for some help/recommendations.

I damaged a wheel on my c63 and replaced it going by the specs stamped on the inside of the alloy. These have turned out to not be accurate and the replaced wheel now rubs on the arch as the ET is wrong. (Previous owner had them machined to fit and failed to share this information with me).

Can anyone recommend or know of anywhere that can machine a few mm off the back of the hub to get it in spec with the rest? I'm east midlands based but willing to travel to get it done.

I've phoned about alot of places local to me and no one has machine capable of fitting a 19" wheel in. Several even offered to use a grinder on it for me

Any help or recommendations would be hugely appreciated.

Ta, Chris.

I would imagine that you would need someone with a big lathe or a vertical borer , so a local machine shop will be your best bet.

Any decent shop will know how critical it is to get the mating face perfect to prevent any run-out at the rim to keep the wheel in balance.

Any one-off machining job will not be cheap as the setup time to get it perfect will far outweigh the actual machining time , especially when machining alloy.

I would get a price from a machine shop and compare it with the price of a used wheel and take it from there.

If going to a machine shop you will need to be accurate as to how much you want off the face to get the offset you want.

I've phoned about 30 in the localish area and none are able to get the wheel size into any machines they have, I've got the correct offset on the other wheels and the damaged one that I took off so that's not too much of an issue. The biggest issue is they're aftermarket wheels and it took me 6 weeks to get hold of a single one and that was at a cost of £400, I'd guess machining it will be less than this, atleast I'd hope so anyway!

Are you calling wheel specialists or actual engineering workshops ?

If it is engineering workshops i am surprised that they have no machines that can hold something 19" / 20" in diameter , either that or they dont want the work.

You dont say where you are located , if we knew that we could maybe point you in the direction of a recommended place.

Can't recommend these guys enough.

Great work (straightened a set of 211 wheels for me) and cheap too.

I'm east midlands based, I've called both wheel specialists and engineering shops endlessly over the last few weeks, alot of them just recommend me to another and then another without any luck.

Most of them are telling me they don't have a machine that it will fit in, even without the tyre.

These guys straightened another wheel for me a couple of weeks back, they couldn't machine my other wheel when I went back and asked, they quoted me 200 to repair my broken wheel but I'd already purchased a new one and had it fitted by this point. I do agree with you though, the work they do is incredible.

Chris.

The tyre would need to be removed anyway as they would locate / grip the outer dia of the rim to machine the internal mounting face.

Possibly sourcing a local lathe with a 20" capacity may be a bit of a task but any industrial Vertical Borer should be more than up to the job.
