Wheel size for SLK230

I have a year 2000 model SLK230 auto. The existing 16" wheels have become corroded and I want to replace them. Can anyone advise on the maximum wheel size I can fit? Also, the front tyre size is narrower than the rear size. Is this critical or can the same size be fitted both front and rear?

The reason that higher powered Merc's often have wider rear rubber is for high speed, high load conditions. I assume that this is a German-initiated issue as it is common on Merc's BMW's and Porsches.

I don't know anything about SLK's but I know that lesser powered C classes don't have this staggered set up.

Thanks for your help. Do you have any idea where I can get confirmation of the maximum wheel diameter I can safely fit? I wanted to go to 18" which seems to be an option on the current SLK.

Sorry - don't know. There are various threads on this topic - try doing an advanced search on "tyre size" or something.

If you're after alloys then i'd recommend you brows through ebay - type in SLK alloys. Give's you an idea on sizes and prices.

Myself - i wouldnt go above 18" or the ride will suffer.

we have had two 230SLK's, the first with 17inch, the second with 16 inch. The 17's were the same size all round. It is amazing how much harder the ride was with 17 inch. We test drove one with 19 inch Chrome wheels. They looked the business but were awful to ride on, bad enough to make us not but the car.
