can any-one tell me what size wheels would have originally been fitted to a 1998 c class 250td.

Hi, 15" fitted with 195 65 15 tyres

If you fit 16" (option) they will need 205/55 tyres to keep the rolling circumference within spec.
(Original fitments were either: 6.5J x 15 with 195/65, 7J x 15 with 205/60 or 7J x 16 with 205/55 tyres).
