Hi
I am new to the forum seeking advise on tyre size. I am going to buy some AMG 17" alloys x 7.5 (or 8.5) for my 96 W124 sportline and wanted to know which tyres were the best size 225x45 or 225x50 as I have been advised that the 50 may catch on the inside of bumper. any thoughts experience from anyone ? Thanks

After having all sizes on our 124's i've come to the conclusion that i would have been better off leaving the blessed things on the standard rims.

Still you asked so, in my experience 215/45 x 17 is best for having no front wheelarch fouling problems, i did try 225/45's but they did catch the front arches on 8'' rims, but they are fine at the rear (goodyear F1's), and to be honest 215's are a bit of a stretch with 8'' rims i would suggest 71/2'' are perfect for 215's.

Trouble is the ride can be harsh and tramlining a problem, if going down this route (no pun intended) again i would get 16'' and go 205/55 x 16, still get tramlining though, but ride much better and vast choice of good tyres at sensible prices.

Its a right game this tyre lark on the 124's cos so little room at front arches.

225/50R17 is simply incorrect.
17x7.5ET35 with 225/45R17 all round is fine and would look like this:

17x8.5ET30 rear with 225/45R17 tyre isn't to everybody's taste - I'll email you this image.

16" AMG Multipiece wheels are extremely cheap compared to the RRP:

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
Beware, you will destroy the nice quiet and smooth ride with wide low tyres.
Stick to the std steel type and get an insurance discount since the scrotes won't want to nick them, tyres are cheaper too.

....I'm not saying you're entirely wrong Wireman, in fact I agree with some of what you say but it takes a very special owner to deny himself his car looking like that and accepting to run it on Steels because of theft, I certainly couldn't do it, it would make me feel so miserable every time I used the car.
Don't let the Scrotes beat you...I have never denied myself anything on my car, you just need to adjust to the change....consider carefully where you park it, if in doubt don't use it....avoid kerbing your alloys....fit a set of locking wheel bolts and maybe upgrade your cars security. They may get the better of me by nicking my wheels but if you ignore any of the above then you have to take some responsibility.
I'm also a great believer in fate and they may get away with it the first time and maybe the second or third but eventually they get caught out in the end as they always do.

Campbell, go to this link
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html
and scroll down until you come to a section marked "A tyre Size Calculator", fill in your cars standard tyre and wheel sizes and then fill in your desired sizes, compare the difference making sure you keep the rolling radius the same, that way you wont suffer and suspension fouling, wheel arch scuffing or bottoming out etc etc.

Good Luck. Jim. ;-)

Guys thanks for your help. Bam Bam thats a very detailed size calculator. Anyway, I have ordered 17 x 7.5 amg alloys with 225 x 45 tyres so that should fit nicely will post pictures when done.
