I have a '98 e300 td estate avantgarde, its done 180k.I have looked through service records etc.and am not able to find out whether these two filters have been changed.
I have taken them both out and there was no sign of any debris or even pollen ! They are black in colour and are dirty to the touch ( I assume its the charcoal )
Does any one know if they should be changed at certain mileages ?
Or would it be better just to change them as I have no record of them ever being changed.

You may find a date stamp molded into the plastic on them. IIRC it is listed in the service booklet when they are changed ~2yrs I think, although I maybe wrong.

I don't think it's mileage specifically. They generally get changed when either it starts to get a bit whiffy or your demister starts to struggle.
Mines just gone in thiis morning and it's scheduled for a 'combination filter' at 2.5yrs and 46k.
Interestingly - have you checked for the gearbox oil and filters?

This car has been serviced at the required time and mileage. All fillters, oil, air.fuel have been changed ( so they say ) no mention of pollen filter being changed. ( funny that the paper sticker on the filters say 1997 )
as this car was reg.in Feb,'98 ?
What has the gearbox oil got to do with filters , pollen or fuel etc ?
A service or B service these filters have not been changed since the car came off the assembly line as far as I see !
