Found the left windscreen drain totally clogged and full of water, i.e. not draining.
then I noticed 1/2” of water around the battery!
Any ideas where the drain for the battery area is on 2009 CL500?
As the battery is right by the clogged windscreen drain I wondered if the there is a Y junction in the drain tubes, and now I have cleared the windscreen drain will the other drain start working?
Hence I tried to find a parts diagram on EPC to see if they joined up.
But can’t find them.
Any ideas?

Yes I coukd take the battery out. But as this is a single battery car, it is massive and hideously tight to get out.
And yes now I am old its a a hell of a strain slowly lowering it.

There isn’t a drain that I can find, water isn’t supposed to get there, but it does if the side drains overflow, pretty poor design if you ask me.

There is a drain at the bottom of the cabin air intake plenum, it’s one of those rubber star affairs, it outputs into a plastic cup which then has a pipe that drains down into the wheel arch separately to the scuttle drains at each side. The usual fault is that the rubber valve turns to mush and water builds up in the cabin air intake plenum. When I was in that area, I dried under the battery, applied a light coating of rust proofing wax and now keep an eye on the side windscreen scuttle drains, as when they overflow, the water ends up under the battery. I also applied a light coating of ACF50 to the pre-fuse box, as they are known to corrode on the underside and cause issues.

Thanks
much appreciated.
I had a feeling when I changed the battery there was a drain hole somewhere in the battery area, so any water would drain out if the drain tubes clogged.
I used a small tube and drained the area and it now stays dry. So you might be right.
But looking at it, it seems a daft design because those side drains clog so easily. Plus jet washIng the car definitely lets water into that area as there is no seal at the top 9” s where the hinge is!
That star shaped bung on mine seems to drain into the middle of the car. And yes mine has rotted. Got one on order I hope it just squeezes off and on.

I widh I could find these on the EPC system I have to check for a battery compartment drain.

where is the prefuse box?
is that the small 4” x 2” block near the negative terminal ?
Or do you mean the big fuse box on the non battery side?

PS worth cleaning the sunroof front drains, and ensuring the sunroof seal is kept sqeaky clean by raising at the back to do all sides.
Found green mould had built up and let Sahara mud rain through!
An was begging to build up in the tray area. Spent a good hour cleaning that all out .

Penalty of not garaging the car.

Hi Richard,
I have cleared 4 drains. One either side of the windshield (sort of flat tube to wheel arches), one central fine grill that dumps near middle of car. And the star bung thing below the air intake on the drivers side.

The air intake on the passenger side, goes into the air/water separator. It has a course plastic grate on it. I guess the air goes to the back and the water drops into a hole. Luckily that was dry. So I assume clear. I didnt have the guts to pour water into it in case I was mistaken that water and air goes into it.

My main question is where is the drain that would clear water that can get into the side of the bonnet near the hinges when say power washing it. Is there a drain hole under the battery?
Difficult to tell but it looks like the battery is sitting on a bolted on black “shelf” like support. Is there a drain hole under this?
And with the battery out, can one get to this drain hole?
When you mentioned the star thing, were you saying there was another one at the bottom of the air water separator box?
thanks

Peter

There is another star bung on the underside of the air separator box, it also collects the water from the fine central grille and routes it down the outside of the box. I removed the battery and tray and could not find a drain, some rubber bungs, but no drain, and like you, there was standing water, leaves and mud etc. There is also an emergency drain flap, you can see in the 2nd picture, which is supposed to drain water if it builds up in the box before it comes inside and ruins the fan. Check that flap isn’t stuck, mine need persuading to open.

just found this video. Mirrors what Richard says
He says there are 2 drains in the floor of the battery compartment.
Will look when I take the battery out.

But he doesn't mention the drivers side.

Nice video, thank you, now I know that there is a drain hidden under the wiring loom, I will be having a look at that before this coming winter for sure.
I wonder where the drain is on the drivers side?
Guess they put it under the big Fuse box !
Luckily mine is dry there, but as there is no seal to the bonnet by the hinges, water defo gets in.

You've found the drain by the drivers side bonnet hinge?
