The only way to know for sure is to get the quote first without your 3 points, then add the points to see what difference they make

Basically it shouldn't make any difference..it certainly didn't to mine ..happily now spent... No one will ask if you haven't declared the points during the last insurance...nor care...I would tend to go with miffy on this.. just casually mention ...after you get the quote.. Oh hey, I just remembered I have 3 points for speeding, will that make it cheaper... as I tend to go faster and get there quicker , spending less time on the road..

I was wondering that, it wasn't so clear from the op post.

If not already declared I'm afraid your insurers will take a dim view of non declaration, assuming it wasn't just a few days ago.

In fact most insurers do nothing on one fixed penalty notice.

You are right

The OPs renewal quote is currently not worth the paper it is written on because the OPs current insurance is not valid.

If you haven't informed your insurance company about these points then strictly speaking your current insurance is null and void

To be fair, 3 points with most companies won't make the slightest bit of difference but if they find out you have withheld such information then they may choose to make a big deal out of it.

I am hoping that the points you have are fairly recent and that you can get away with telling them you have only just got round to it but you must tell them before you renew otherwise you will move from not having told them to fraudulently obtaining insurance which is a whole different ball game.

I've never declared speeding points until next renewal - do you speak with authority (and if so, which) about non declaration voiding your insurance?

It's there in black and white in your insurance policies terms and conditions.

Don't take my word for it, read for yourself.

Will do Mark - you live and learn - luckily I'm all up to date at the mo.

I haven't been banned for speeding since 1988

I'm concerned for the OP

We all know insurance companies don't need much of an excuse to either not pay our or screw more money out of us.

I also know somebody who had a £40,000 total loss claim rejected out of hand for something similar leaving him with a huge loan to pay off and no car to show for it (he's currently driving a 10 year old Fiesta).

Read my original post!
I haven't got a renewal quote yet.......and I fully intend to declare the 3 points when the renewal happens. I have no intention of withholding anything.

I think the point is Chris, that maybe you should declare the points to your existing insurer to be on the safe side.

Perhaps so....I just didn't think of it at the time. The points were accrued in April of 2011.............2 and a bit months after my renewed insurance started. I'll give them a shout tomorrow just to be on the safe side and plead ignorance!! (Although I know ignorance is no excuse!!)

Don't worry...I don't think I'd have done it either...but will do now if the need arises.

Chris - The only worry about not telling your insurer about your points is if you are involved in an accident/claim where you are deemed at fault. Should this happen then your insurer *could* decide to be awkward about your cover.

A friend of mine did not tell his insurer about a speeding ticket/ 3 points and a fine. He was involved in an accident where another car ran into his vehicle. He was not hurt, and he was not at fault but there was sufficient damage to both vehicles to mean a reasonable claim. When reporting the details of the accident he told his insurers about his points which he got a few months before the accident. They were not bothered and just said they would note this for his renewal. As the person that hit my mate had admitted full liability (rear end shunt) meaning my mates insurer did not have to pay out his insurer was not bothered about the non disclosure of the 3 points at the time of the offence.

Officially you're supposed to declare it to your insurer immediately. It's one of those things that they could make an issue out of but as most people don't bother until renewal I've never heard of an insurer getting stroppy about it. Possibly if you had something more serious than an SP30 but as most of us have one or two of those, it's considered normal.
An interesting thing about points I discovered on my last one, is that they date to the offence, not the conviction. There was a bit of messing about with paperwork on my last one and it took nearly 3 months after the event before they finally stamped my licencewith a date 3 months earlier. So effectively I got away with 3 months of points. Minor but worth dragging it out as long as you can.

As for renewal. Yes most insurers load you because they can but if they don't load you for that they'll load you for something else. Swings and roundabouts. Either way, insurers don't really care that much and it's certainly not something you need a specialist broker to sort out. As has been said, it's harder to find someone without an sp30.
I use the comparison sites every year. Sometimes I end up with a broker, other times, a direct insurance co. It's different every year. I'm back with LV this year and I've actually ended up insuring both cars with them. I used to be with them consistently a few years back but they suddenly got expensive and were playing the 'new customers only' card so I told them where to stick their renewal. As I'm now a new customer they're cheaper. They won't be next year and I'll be off again. The days of loyalty are over, I haven't taken a renewal for years.
The comparison sites are great but I also always try direct (once the comparison site has suggested someone). Last time I did this I saved another tenner, much to the wife's annoyance (she wanted a meercat!).

Folks, thank you for all the opinions offered on this topic.

A few excellent points were raised so this morning I phoned my broker and told them of the situation.

They told me they didn't need to know about any accumulated points until my next renewal date.

The girl said it makes no difference whatsoever about points accumulated between renewals unless there is a disqualification issue.

Furthermore she told me that when my insurance is due for renewal then 3 points will make no difference whatsoever to the new premium.

So I guess this answers my question....and it may clarify some issues for the rest of you too.

Chris1200, I was with hughes for quite a while until, like most, they became uncompetitive and I now use 'Bell' - worth a call.(Bell.co.uk)

I've never heard of Bell. Gotta be worth a try. I have to say Abbey have always been the cheapest for me, year after year.
