I have a mercedes camper van 207D 1983 which I want to do an oil and filter change on before taking it to France this Easter. I do not have any manuals on the model and cannot see the oil filter. Can somebody please tell me where the oil filter is hidden? Also any advice on the best oil to use, and whether flushing is advisable would be appreciated.

Your oil filter is on the side of the block, its a long round cylinder with a nut on the top (end)

I am sorry to have to ask again but I have looked under the bonnet, under the engine cover in the cab, and have crawled under the van looking up and cannot see the cylinder you describe. Can you be more specific as to the location?
Is it on the manifold side, or the fuel pump side?
Radiator end or starter motor end?
Is it beside, above , or below any component that I might recognise?
I know this must sound pathetic but I just cannot see it.
I believe the van was originally a mini bus that has been converted to a camper. The engine is in line most of it being accessible from under a cover in the cab. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards John.

Dear television
I have just read your reply and it is too dark tonight to read the engine number, but I will try to get it tomorrow. When I bought the van the owner gave me two oil filters that he had bought to put in. They are both Hengst filters of the type that is designed to go inside a filter housing, and come complete with an "o" ring and copper washer. As they are two very different sizes, one 58mm dia by 100mm long, the other 90mm dia. at largest end by 190mm long. The smaller one is E135H D08, and the larger of the two E196HN D03. I hope this will help in the quest, if not I will find the engine number and let you know.
Thanks for all your efforts.
Regards John

The canaster you are looking for is the same size as the filter, it normally always fits on the inlet side of engine, some go straight down, others are angled, the rubber seal fits in a groove in the oil filter housing, and the copper washer fits between the bolt and canaster filter holder.

Dear Television
I am working 12 hour shifts at the moment but will try again to locate the oil filter and do an oil change this weekend. The engine number in case it makes any difference to your most welcome advice is 61693920007757.
Thanks again,
John

Two different filters were used, a by pass or full flow. the full flow is under the engine right by the sump drain plug on corner of sump,it has one center bolt. the bypass filiter has two nuts on the end cap.
Smear a little engine oil on the rubber seal before you insert it.
