Sorry to be a pain, but can someone tell me where to find my MAF unit? My car is a 1996 c180 elegance auto. I have looked where it says it should be in the haynes manual but its not there. :(
All I have is a plastic pipe (no electrical Connections) which runs from the air filter, over the top of the engine to the throttle.
Regards Roy.

BTW - Does anyone find the haynes manual of any use?

Hmmm!

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for the info, but my air hoses do not look like those shown. I'll take a picture and post it here shortly then you'll see what I mean.
Regards Roy.

Your engine and intake system is the same layout as mine ; mine has a MAF, but I have noticed from other pictures that some do not seem to have one. I would have thought it would be an advantage if your car was set up to run without one considering the problems they seem to cause.
For most things I find the Haynes manual adequate;torque settings, basic wiring and most systems are covered well but there are some omissions. It is handy for reference but is by no means comprehensive. What is the alternative at a reasonable price ?

Royville, does your car run ok as it is? smooth gear changes and kick down coming in where it should? I just had to replace my Maf ( 97 C180 Elegance) because I had sluggish or nearly no acceleration sometimes. To test if the Maf was faulty I drove it 30 miles or so on all sorts of roads and found the low speed gear changes were quite rough but acceleration was fine.
With the new Maf in, everything has gone smooth again.

Now you mention it Allan, it does kick when changing gear quite often especialy when cold and some times it won't change down going up hill resulting in the engine mauling. Im hoping its 72000 mile service will cure these problems. Acceleration isnt brillient but then again it is an 1800 pulling a big car.

I am at a loss on this one, no MAS, looking at your photo, you have the air box front left, the ducting goes towards screen,it would have fitted in place of the rubber boot that turns the ducting to the right.

You don't have a MAF !! C180's up to 6/96 use PMS (pressure management system) engine code M111.920.It's intergrated on the side of the throttle body shown in your photo.
From 6/96 on HFM (hot film mass) engine code M111.921 was used with the wire in the airflow. At the same time the coils where placed on top of the spark plugs and some additional electronics added to intergrate with the new 5 speed electronic gearbox. The later cars run a tiny bit smoother as a result.
MAFS are cheap these days.Pattern ones are £39.95 on Ebay and inserts are available from Bosch agents. In fact you can get them cheaper at MB commercial dealers if you have the part number as the Vito vans use them too.
On the six cylinder cars the M104 engines (E280 and E320) of late 93 on also saw the introduction of HFM technology.
