Hi I’m buying a new CLS with 20” alloys and have been told that the comfort and noise varies dependent on tyre manufacturer. Would be grateful on advice / your experience of which run flats are best for ride comfort?

Yes difficult to mention comfort and runflats in the same sentence. My son is running a 213 E220d with 20in wheels with Goodyear runflats and they seem a lot better ride than my 4 series with 19in Bridgestone Potenza fitted.

I’ve bought a spacesaver spare wheel kit for the 4 series so may ditch the runflats for conventional tyres at the next change, as an aside the M4 runs on conventional tyres which says it all really

^ what they said, wouldn’t touch a run flat unless I was initially stuck with it!

Ok, so to ignore all the ditch run flats comments and actually answer your question, I would be looking at Michelin. It’s what I’m running on my BMW at the moment and am more than pleased with it. Another friend of mine has Bridgestone and they rock hard in comparison.

Runflats have improved greatly and they're not as noisy or as uncomfortable as they were when first introduced. I still wouldn't chose them unless I had to though

I have Michelin Primicy ZP on my 213, and to be honest, I don't really notice any difference over normal tyres.

Actually the reason for them being more uncomfortable, not to mention not as stable at high speed over undulations are two-fold.

One because of the much stronger and reinforced sidewall making it less malleable to impacts.

And two, because of the increased Unsprung Weight, due to the much heavier construction, which results in more impacts transferred to the car body.

So the stiffer sidewall along with the increase in unsprung weight is a double whammy! ie. crap.....
