Which C Class

I have heard that certain C Class models had sub standard parts fitted by a poor contractor and that these models can be identifyed by certain Chassis Number ranges. Can anyone help, I am looking to by an 2003 - 2005 model either a 200K or 180K. Any help would be much appreciated.
