Hello

I'm looking to buy my first MB.
I need a diesel estate and was considering a c220cdi, c270cdi or an older E320cdi.

My knowledge of MB is rather limited what could i get within £10k?
What are the trap to avoid?

Thanks for your help

Jack

I do not have any experience of the C Class but I would be very wary of the E320CDi because you would be looking at a W210 with all the rust issues.

If you want an E, I would go for a first class W124 which you could easily get for £10K.

I've had both - my current is a W210 E240, previously I had a W124 300TE-24. I prefer the W124.

Really depends what you want the car to do. I've had a pair of C270 Estates and, other than the fact that their not v. big in normal boot mode (rather than seats down/load cover out) they were almost the perfect mode of transport for me. 50mpg was more than possible on a run and plenty of power when needed. Just for fun I've swapped to an Alfa Spider 2.4JTDm and for the gain of 30bhp have lost 15mpg on the same run however I now have a smile like a cheshire cat !

Sorry I'm a bit lost, how long the W124 was built for and during which period?

Is there a recommended website to get a Used MB?

Cheers

The W124 was built from 1985 to 1995.

The estate cars came in 5 or 7-seat models, the 7-seater having a rear-facing bench seat that folded flush. It had a luggage compartment cover and retractable cargo net.

The W124 estate version continued when the replacement W210 model was put in to production, and ceased when the estate version of the W210 appeared.

With regard to a good source, perhaps someone else can point you in the right direction.

£10k will get you the very finest W124 E300 Diesel estate and change. Your only problem (and I'm not being flippant here) is finding one

If I were you, I would go for the best C220 CDI that you can find, I would not worry unduly of high mileages with this engine as long as it has a FMBSH and looks immaculate (i.e. unabused) You could get all nostalgic and go for a 124 but IMO although lovely cars they are extremely dated and lacking essential safety features.

For this money you may get a 2003 03' model with between 60-80K, the later the better and of course the higher spec the better. If youa re OK with a manual then there is the better chance of a bargain. Ex fleet models are a good choice and there are a couple of ebay sellers who do have a number of these regularly up for sale. Autoquake and UKcarsite.

I should know, i bought my 53' C180K Estate from autoquake for 4 figures!
