Looking to replace my 211 320CDI that has an 80 litre tank.

Budget probably 15 to 25k

Which one??

Ideally with a larger tank, towbar for a bike rack + memory seats. I’m not fussed about any other extras. 10k/yr - mostly motorway miles.

Trying to avoid a diesel as the taxes are nipping my head, but I’m struggling to see past a 220d.

E220d circa 2017 to 2021

E200 petrol? Cheap in tax

I understand the newer E200s have a mild hybrid option – I’m wary of this mild hybrid option figuring that if things go south the repair costs will be disproportionately high.

V6 diesel with no hybrid?

I tried a 220d 9 speed – very capable and will be the most likely.

I need something makes lane changes in a fully laden E class relatively stress free – I reckon an E200 petrol may be OK, just.

Is there a 350V6 without the add blu nonsense?

An E400 feels a bit much for me tbh.

It looks like some of the new models are just tuned 2litre diesels.

I’m really conflicted and know I’ll have to compromise on something.

Thoughts, suggestions? I could keep the 211 E320cdi as triggers broom, but tax and servicing could go towards paying off a newer motor?

Some of these are £20 a year in RFL

You will need to check towing capacity as well

E43 is a great petrol option (This one has a tow bar fitted)

Prob need "Premium Plus" to get memory seats

Ah, so the newer 220s cost just over a tank of derv a year to tax. I get stitched up for more tax for my parking permit, too.

The tow bar will only be for a bike rack.

I’ll need to take a close look at an E43, thanks!

Quite a dilemma…

My view is:

- the smaller petrol engined cars aren’t powerful enough for an E estate
- the diesel EU6 offerings with ADBLUE are a problem waiting to happen
- the AMG versions ie, E43 and E53 are low on tax and very well equipped but average <25 mpg and more expensive to buy

So as you say you will have to make a compromise

If the E53 hybrid is something that doesn’t appeal due to it’s complexity the possibility of high maintenance costs and budget the E43 is ceratainly a contender there are still a few low miles examples around if you’re prepared to wait for the right car.

Good luck with the search - I nearly opted for the E43 which is the last conventional V6 ICE engine MB produced the twin turbo set-up almost clinched it for me but in the end bought the E53 IL6

Only some of them are £20, use the filter on AT and it will pull them up

I've had the E220d estate and now the E400d All-terrain. Both very capable, and the 220d is perfectly good as a car. As has been mentioned, find one with the Premium Plus pack. They were the start of the era where MB UK decided that British people couldn't specify cars very well so everything became just "Packs" rather than a range of options.
I'm sure some on here will disagree with me, but in addition to the above, my wife has a 10 year old C220d, all of which have been AdBlu engines and have been faultless. This is a great forum, and has solved untold numbers of issues for members, but also bear in mind 95% of people only post on here with a problem which can distort perceptions of reliability. Even when mechanics say "We get loads of problems with those" it is still not validated necessarily against the number of vehicles that have no issues.

I had a new E350 Estate a while ago and I absolutely loved it, I kept this for 5 1/2 years which is the longest I have owned a car.

The E350 has the V6 diesel engine which is a peach of an engine mine was a Bluetec so uses adblue but I had no issues during my ownership.

The V6 engine in this car is very economical and has lots of punch, I took my car to France a few times and it was a lovely driving experience.

I had that engine in my C207 and I can confirm it is a beauty.

Memory seats - these days the wing mirrors aren’t hooked up to that function, never mind the rear view - what’s all that about? Only the actual seat? Seems like a half *’d solution.

So, think you have to pa am extra X thousand quid to get memory seats then only get half the product?

Be as well off with a nice SE.

I’m so depressed about the specs.

I don’t know what you’ve got but my in my GLC the memory seats include the door mirrors and steering wheel. I suspect it is just too difficult to implement for the rear view mirror given the lack of space for motors etc

My Omega's rear view mirror used to be tied into the memory seat & door mirrors.

I don’t have memory seats, but I recall being in Merc years ago where the mirrors and steering wheel were all tied to it. I am probably mistaken about the rear view.

I won't say they never have, but I've had several Mercedes ( 3 E-Classes, an S-Class and a GL) with memory seats, and they've all only done seats, steering column and door mirrors, never rear view mirror.

The earlier R129’s had a memory rear view mirror if the car had the memory pack option, which was operated from the three position mirror switch, left and right for the mirrors and centre for the mirror..

I have a 2011 212 E350CDI bought it 6 months old, its ben a great car.
It has the 80ltr tank, memory seats & mirrors no AddBlue.
I have just returned from a 2,600 mile holiday to Italy & back, it returned 49.6 mpg overall.
Maintained 80 mph on the autobahns, & its quite capable of over 850 on a tank full.

If range is important to you a 4 cylinder is the way to go.

An E250d will do 50mpg to 60 mpg on a run and still 'move' when needed

Those with diesels swear by the V6 E350d though for 40 to 50 mpg (and better trim usually)....

Took a 2019 220d for a spin recently. I wondered what the thumping was and finally reckoned it was just a characteristic of the 4cyl diesel. It’s the sensible choice I guess when coupled with a 9speed.
