I am considering buying a late 70's early 80's SL as I just think the style and look is an absolute classic. - I love it !!!

What I am wondering is which engine option is the best to go for in terms of reliability, running / repair costs etc.

The car is likely to be used on 'high days and holidays' weekends etc. - but will have to be capable of touring the country when needed.

Any advice on what to look out for when buying these cars gratefully accepted.

Thanks in anticipation

Hi

If you do a search on 107 you'll find lots of past advice on what to look out for and some discussion on best model.

Brief summary (from my perspective) - go for latest, i.e. 300/420/500SL post '85 facelift/new engines; look out for rust (see earlier threads). As for what engine - I love my M103 straight-6s (both of them), but if I were doing it again with an SL I'd go for a V8.
