Whining noise gets worse on steering

Hi All

I have an '83 500SL ( for my sins ).

On starting the car, I am experiencing a rubbing/whining noise, which can be heard above the engine noise. It gets worse when steering in either direction, quietens down a bit when the car is warmed up, but never quite goes away.

I would try to top up the steering fluid, but the blessed manual doesn't show me where the reservoir is, or what fluid to use.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Look for a belt driven pump with two hose lines going to the steering box, and a vented nut holding the top cap on. This will be your steering pump.

Take off the nut and remove the cap, but do not fill it to the top only fill it to the mark on the stem; about half ways up. :p
