Hi folks, I have a 2005, E Class 220cdi with 79,000 miles on it. Increasingly over the last few months it has developed a whine as you are accelerating. This happens in first gear up to approx 2000 rpm and then 2nd, again up to approx2000 rpm and so on. Once you reach normal driving speeds, and the revs settle below 2000 or thereabouts it quietens down. Not sure if it is a gearbox issue or what, just concerned that I may be causing damage by continuing to use the car. Any advice welcomed before I have to get it to the garage. Cheers folks

When did you last have your gearbox oil changed?

Is the pitch of the whine speed dependent or rpm dependent?
If it's RPM dependent then does it do it in neutral? Also, does it do it with the radio turned off?

On my c220 CDI 2005 I had also whining and whistle noise from under the bonet while getting 1900-2000rpm and up. Took too the garage and it appeared to be turbocharger. Expensive part and labour if you go for the new one, but I went for reconditioned as the labour still came around £380. During the job mechanic found also one of the bolts connecting exhaust to manifold corroded and snapped (needed drilling out, new gaskets and replacement of bolts) causing the whistling sounds. Hope that's at any help.

If you have a 5 speed autobox you can check oil levels yourself

Yeah. it will definitely whine if the fluid level is low.
Better to get it changed if you have no idea when it was last done and it is around the milage where it starts playing up. The pilot bushing will almost certainly be leaking into the electrical connector (I think like everyone else we are assuming it is an auto).

Could it be the rear bearings? Does the noise stop when you let off the gas pedal?

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you all, thanks for all your suggestions and replies. Have had the auto gearbox serviced, but still the whining exists. Car going back into the garage next week for further investigations, as I have now just had the ESP and ABS warnings appear. Thanks again folks.

Unlikely to be transmission related (unless it's the input side of the gearbox).
Sounds like a broken exhaust manifold bolt or leaking gasket.
