My MY2000 W202 C180 makes a slightly audible whining noise when you turn the steering wheel. This started about 18-20 months ago but was barely audible. I took it then to George Fraser, they couldn't hear anything and suggested it might not be anything to worry about. It has recently gotten more audible although you still have to listen for it (radio off etc...). Wife's moaning about it now also - she couldn't hear it before either. Plan to take it back to GF this weekend just wondering if anyone might know what the cause is?

Thanks.

Possibly time for a new power steering belt?

Will find out this weekend. Don't think so though, if that was the case the noise should come from the engine bay where the belt is located. This noise comes from the steering wheel itself.

If the noise is comming through the steering wheel, then a hose or something could be touching the steering column, with the engine running, try slightly moving any pipes near by.

Update:
Took it to George Fraser's.They gave it a once over. At first they couldn't hear it; then I had to mute the radio and ask him to put his ear to the steering wheel (it's that low). Said it was nothing to worry about. Not convinced yet but will see how it goes for a few more months.

Does this "noise" happen when it's on FULL LOCK????..........If it does .....I had a jeep grand cherokee that did the same thing I was told by the main dealer that it's caused by the power to the steering pump pushing against nothing!!!(By that I took him to mean it "Strains" the rack when you reach full lock) i.e if you try & push it beyond the "Range" of the steering, it puts the power steering pump under strain & causes it to "Whine"
