Hi,

Not a mech so looking for possibilities from more knowledgable sources!

I've got a 2004 E320 Avantgarde.

There's a whining noise from the engine (video is at rest/on start), continues when warmed. Maybe a slight dip in whining level when on gas b ut not much.

Any ideas on what the cause/remedy might be?

TIA,
Digital.

Remove the serpentine belt (after taking photos to see how it goes back again!) and start the car to see if it does it without the belt.
Don't run it more than a minute. If the noise is gone turn each pulley by hand feeling for looseness or grittyness. Typical suspects are the idler pulley and tensioner pulley.

As per Lostkiwi’s suggestion, but try driving the car without wife/ significant other, and see if the whine goes away ;)

So took off the serpentine and no whining. Span all pulleys as per the new video. Idler needed replacing so did that, but...

This is the water pump? Do I need to replace some bearing/pulley or the whole system?

This looks a replacement part. any one agree/used this before?

Odd noise from the water pump, but I think you may be spinning it backwards.

You need to check for the play in the water pump by rocking the pulley. They don't tend to whine, more like a grinding noise.

Ha! Didn’t realise that it was only one way.

Ordered a new one anyways as thought it was the only thing making a noise!

Ac compressor doesn’t make a noise but has slightly more resistance than all others. May look into a bypass belt if the water pump doesn’t fix the issue.

Ac compressor has a swash plate, rather than a clutch, so normal to be harder to turn.

Any particular coolant required, and any ideas how much in quantity?

Can't see it in the handbook.

325.0 spec

Not sure if they list a "water pump removed" option for coolant capacity, but 5l concentrate will be plenty.

If the idle and tension pulley are original change them.
They can let go without warning, it happened to my CLK a few years ago and caused more problems.

Its the wrong pump. There are two versions, one for cars with the oil cooler (that connects to the connector where your pen is) and one without

Theoretically if everything else is the same you could just block that connection.

Well even though the idler and water pump were making funny noises (I checked the water pump in the other direction - same story) the whining is still there!

The tensioner spins freely and without noise so I want to do install an ac delete belt to check whether its the AC or power steer.

Fell like dropping 10-15 quid rather than 100's. So the question is how long should it be? I see lots of differing post with 2185 being suggested.

Does anyone know definitively?

cheers!
