Hi,

My wife owns a 200slk registered in 2000 with 60,000 miles on the clock. It has a 6spd manual gearbox. She loves it to bits.

Over the last few days it has developed a noise when you take you foot off the accelerator and is audible at low speeds (i.e. 30mph). Once the car comes to a stop the noise stops. When you put it to neutral the noise remains. When you drop the clutch and keep in gear the noise remains.

At first I thought it was wheel bearing. However a independent garage found no faults with the wheels. On closer inspection the noise may be coming from the behind the engine - but I'm not 100% sure.

It sounds like a dull metallic scraping noise and almost like a whining noise.

Can anyone help out. I have it booked it a merc dealer tomorrow morning.

thanks

The prop shaft center bearing comes to mind, much cheaper to fix at an indie.

One way to check this is easy, put the car into a gear and jack one rear wheel, by turning that wheel in each direction you will see if the prop shaft goes up and down in the center, if not much , put the car in N and turn the wheel and listen

Malcolm,

Can the bearing be replaced or does the entire prop shaft have to be replaced?

A new center bearing is fitted, and while one is at it, the end flexi couplings are worth while changing at the same time

You can see it all here
http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.460&CT=F&cat=45F&SID=41&SGR=015&SGN=01

By seeing how far you can move the center bearing up and down can tell you how bad it is worn, do be sure thogh that this is the cause of the noise

Thanks. I need to get the garage to confirm it's the prop shaft. The car has a warranty (not mercedes) which should hopefully cover it.

Indeed to do sir, other things like brake backing plates can make noises
