Hi, help please on another problem that seems to be gearbox related.

I have a 2003 e20cdi avantgarde Tip AUTO 120k miles Full merc history.

Ive had it 3 months, had it fully serviced at Waterhouse Mercedes in chelmsford by a mate thats a tecnician there.

Full oil change, all filters changed, changed new gearbox oil and filter with a very clean magnet in the sump ie no shards of metal.

The problem is.:(

If i hold the car in a gear ie. come off the throttle slightly just before it changes gear and keep it at the same revs/speed i get a terrible whining noise with a vibration coming through the steering wheel. It goes as soon as it changes into the next gear.

Also gear selection from auto box is jerky for example.. when slowing down to take a bend at say 30mph it will select 2nd gear giving you a jerk forward then when reapplying the throttle it selects the next gear too soon leaving me in the wrong gear for pulling away out of the bend this is in summer & winter mode.

All gear changes are clonky when pottering about, it gets a bit smoother when driving hard, also mpg has really shot down.

Last thing Ive noticed, every now and then after turning off the A/C i get a smell of coolant through the vents only for a minute or so but no leaks on the floor and its not that the ac needs checking as my mate done this too??.

Apologies for the ever so long story.

I hope you can help please.

P.S Before i get asked, my mate at mercedes cant look at it now as he's got another baby on the way and he has got his hands tied at weekends now painting at home:confused::lol:

Thanks!!!

this is not a good post :( It sounds like the glycol problem again this month

You should get a glycol test done for glycol in the gear box.

The glycol is not visible, and can only be checked with the MB kit circa £8

Its a kit where you take a sample of the box fluid and mix it in the jar ion the kit, and it will give a positive or negative read out, if positive the amount per liter will be given

Hi ive still got the whining noise.

Ive now found it actually makes the noise when bringing the revs up in neutral, not just in gear.

This then is nothing to do with the gearbox, and must be something like the alternator pulley on the front of the engine.

As it does it in N and D open the bonnet and see if you can hear the noise at the front of the engine
