Hi - my '89 300se makes a strange whirring noise that comes from the area around the front passenger glovebox. When you open the glovebox it seems a little louder so I assume it must be somewhere in that area. Directly behind the glovebox in the engine compartment is the battery of course. It sounds a little like a blower motor on it's lowest speed - but the blowers are'nt on. You can barely hear it when you attain normal driving speeds but with the ignition on and the engine not running it is perfectly clear. Any ideas?.

On further investigation the noise seems to be coming from just below the glove box. There is a panel there held on by a few screws which I will endeavour to take off when I get a bit more time. I will post when I know more.

I spoke to one of the little people, he said that he doesn’t know a thing about the 300se but that you should try taking out one fuse at a time until the “whirring” stops. This apparently will narrow your search.

Fat guy . Welcome and Apologies Apologies. You must think that you have fallen into the weirdest forum on earth. It is not exactly true. It is the case that you have unfortunately come to the attention of some of the more bizzare members here. For instance, out of the three members who have replied, One is a rain sensor expert with an associated expertise in Nipple Tassels. The other two are W 202 wiper experts and one of those admits to and confesses to talking to Leprechauns. The other wiper expert recently disassembled a wiper mechanism, broke the assembly in two and nearly lost a finger in the process.

So Fat Guy I suppose you are wondering what the hell these different "Experts" are doing advising you on a Blower problem..... Well your guess is as good as it gets.

Quite frankly I think you would be well advised to wait for one of the more " normal " members to respond to your post.

You have a small fan behind the glove box it draws air over a thermistor in the interior light unit via a rubber tube in the LHS pillar to measure the cabin temperature.

Maybe this is your noise source, if it is try lubricating the motor shaft once you have:-
a/ removed the glove box door and liner.
b/ found the felt or foam parcel that is supposed to keep it quiet.
c/ cut the cable ties that hold it onto the bodyworkand remove the tube.
d/ extracted it from the foam parcel.

Then in your hand, there will be a small motor (same size as the washer pump) with a fan in a case on one end which attaches to the rubber tube from the lamp unit.
A drop of oil on each end bearing might cure it, but a new unit may be a better choice.

Without this fan the heater will get very hot and stay hot a while, then get quite cool and stay cooooool for lonnnng time, this is not pleasant your feet dont half feel the cold air and when it finaly decides to heat up again you will melt.

You may be able to enlist one of the little people to go in there and oil it for you without dismantling the car, but you will have to catch one first.

It is probably the device that controls the temperature setting.

Even without air con, the interior temperature is electronically controlled very accurately between min and max temperatures (cannot remember what actual figures are) and the electronic control activator is in dash area.

The temperature sensor itself is in area of roof light.

The local MB dealers are quoting £35 + vat. They have the part on their books for 48 hour delivery and it is listed as a 'blower' after quoting the MB part number stamped on it. I'll probably leave it for a while as there are other more important things need doing. Thanks again.
