I have just recieved this from a man who knows:-

I can confirm that the A class diesels do not have a Diesel Particulate Filter.

The only vehicles that are now fitted as standard with DPF are the ML and GL 320/420 CDI’s and the S320CDI. DPF is not even listed as an option for other models. The only way you can have one fitted to anything other than the models mentioned is if the dealer does a special request to DCUK.

I thought DPF's were to be required under EU4. Anyone know the full situation on this?

I don't believe they are mandated to have them as long as the vehicle does not exceed the emissions limits set for that class.

Smaller engines also produce less soot per Km than larger engines.

Why would you want to choke the engine with one? It does not really help the environment. Energy consumed and emissions released in its creation combined with the higher fuel consumption of the engine its installed on outweigh what few little benefits filtering out the soot provides.

This is the first thing that came up when Googling DPF:
http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuels-and-environment/diesel-particulate-filters.html

I can't tell from the tone of your email quite where you're coming from, but you really *do not want* a DPF - they're causing all sorts of problems if the car is subjected to the 'wrong kind if use'.

That is a very useful and informative link. Thanks.

No I don't want a DPF. I am just curious. I had one on the S320cdi and they seemed at one time to be an option on many cars including Golfs, BMW's and so on. But now they seem to be disappearing. I just wondered why (your link gives good enough reasons) and what the Euro regs were. Looks as though it will be a part of Euro 5.
