I know it's not a new question, but I haven't a clue.

Does anyone actually know (in which case I guess they're hardly likely to post the answer here) or what is everyone's best guess?

Surely there's some trainspotter type amongst us that has put some work in to this question and can come up with a plausible answer?

Incidentally;

1. I mean no offence to trainspotters as clearly without your work some of our trains would have gone missing over the years.
And
2. If anyone has worked out who the Stig is I am not suggesting you are in any way as pointless as a trainspotter and see point 1 above

it's either Turnip or me

based on in-car music choices. Let's see if we can guess what he'll be listening to next week.
My money is on..........Uriah Heep.

Myros,

If you're not sure it's you (let me put this as delicately as I can), it isn't you. Sorry for that bombshell.

Appalling taste in music does not a Stig make.

its Perry McArthey (sp). or it used to be at least.

Think Perry stopped at the end of the last series. Or whenever he "drove off the Ark Royal".

I can't believe people actually took that seriously and wrote to the BBC to complain about the lack of respect shown !!

I beg to differ

I have a flash watch, a set of overalls, some pumps, and I'm sure I can find a helmet somewhere. Crank up the hi-fi with some Brand-X and presto-chango,
Stigo. And I can set off without burning rubber as well.

Could it be that German bird who took the deisel Jag and the Transit around the German track?

Well lets examine the evidence:

1. Stig never displays ability to reverse - CHECK
2. Stig keeps arms folded thus subconsciously hiding underarm foliage that would be frowned on by a British audience - CHECK

but hold on,

3. Keeps slapping thigh and laughing heartily - Errrr
4. Signs of plaitts sticking out from under helmet - Errrrrrr
5. Inclination to annex parts of the track - Errrrrrrrrrrr
-and the clincher-
6. DRIVES BETTER THAN EVERY OTHER MAN - NO! NO! NO!

It's a good suggestion but I'm afraid that national and sexual stereotypes prove conclusively (and on so many levels) it's not the German bird.

but I am

the same age as Damon Hill, and grey-haired in as distinguished a kind of way, and have also done 115 up the M40 ( allegedly).
I have never owned a Renault though.

It's not over...

...not 'till your loose lipped pal comes up with a photo of Mr Hill pulling on his Bandit crash helmet.

In the mean time - my monies on Myros. Ok, his grip on reality is tenuous and his arguement less than convincing but, well, he drives a MB and that's got to count for something hasn't it!

Thanks for the support Jimbo

but I have to come clean.

Sit down everyone, hold your breath, for I am not the Stig.

I could have been a contender though, if only my Dad had been F1 World Champion, and I'd grown up around fast cars, instead of just cars.

It was Turnipstig all along. You can tell it's him because he is being very quiet about it.

MultiStigs

I have been advised that there a a few of 'em.
Sadly none have my physical characteristics. (Portly and doddery).
My son, who is is employed in the business, once sat in my passenger seat as I was enjoying myself down a back lane. After some quiet contemplation of my style he eventually remarked "I can see that you are used to driving performace cars dad". Such perspicacity inflated my ego, only to be dashed following the pause for effect "cos I would have had to set up my car for that corner, you just sailed round it letting the car sort out the details!"

'Uriah Heep' it's about time we had some of that. Judging by last weeks obscure stuff, Rush, PFM or Jethro Tull must be in with a shout.

Has The Stig produced a CD, of his favorite tunes, for the sunday papers yet?

From some of the guests chats, it's as if they only have radio contact with The Stig. DH does look like the main Stig, but they probably have some stand ins in case he is not available. This would explain why he took the chance to bang a Ferrari into the tyres.

I think the STIG is that lady with the motorbike from the telly that advertises cold sore treaments....

Same helmet, both wear leather......she appears not to have the heaviest chest shape too...(no offence intended).

I get the impression that the STIG will end up being the least likely person.......Hammond perhaps? Nah, he classes a slight twitch as a powerslide....

Right or wrong....I still dont think its Mr Hill....

Stig - solved!

Apparently it is Ben Collins, the former ASCAR champion (and 2003 European Days of Thunder Champion). He did the parachute into an CLK convertible on Top Gear back in 2003. He is an oval track specialist having broken every record in European Speedway racing.

JC made some comment tonight that the Stig took a different line to Dameon Hill...I thought it might be red herring as we are getting close.

I think we have had Camel before. What are Ben's musical tastes?

Did you see Clarkson's reaction when the shouty bird that no longer shouts, mentioned Bernie Eccelston?
