i took these pics just for interest. As the fuel meters use averages i have placed a few pics on just incase you think i am cheating.

and for the whole trip the results were a total of 152miles. took 2.34hrs, averaged speed over the whole journey was 60MPH (For those looking in to the piccies will notice that i got the foot down after i took them)
31.5mpg average.

(Just for info. its a V8 5439cc 24v petrol SLK55AMG)

Absolutely. A 5.5 v8 idling - which is all yours needs to do to carry an SLK on a motorway won't be using much fuel. Can't help thinking that to get the performance out of the diesels they give away a fair bit in economy. I'm gettng 32 average and just short of 38 on long runs, and thats out of a 2.4 v6 petrol. Admittedly, town mpg is crap, but your not many M's in town so who cares about the PG bit!

I think the argument for diesels has gone away from economy and on to performance - a 320cdi si the only way I'll ever get near the torque of a v8.

Then again if the greenies get their way, we'll all be driving these silly hybrids - can't see the point myself - surely the extra weight of all the motors, batteries and gizmos you need in hybrids wipes out any economy saving. Didn't an ML CDi return better economy that the Lexus hybrid in a recent test?

I'm getting 29.5+... you're right!

A more restrained 66 miles this morning gave 37 average.

Went in C (av 37.4) , came back in S (av 36.6 I guess to make 37 overall)

Limiter at 100 but lots of 70,80,90 in morning M40/M42 traffic.

Overall overall average, or overall average average? 29.2 which reinforces jb's comments about diesel economy vs diesel performance.

Am expecting some small increase over time and 30+ including all the fun stuff will meet requirements.

I noticed this a number of years ago with a firms Ford 1.7l T diesel. If i drove the diesel HARD, it would use much more fuel than the same vehicle with a 1.6L petrol engine!!!

Yes - only yesterday I was wondering whether a 5-speed auto BMW 330d touring with a DMS chip (400lb/ft torque, 270 bhp) would keep up with Blassberg's new C300d........

Hmmm wonder what DMS can do for a c270......

DMS can find 215bhp out of a 270cdi and the e320 seemingly finds 252bhp. would guess the new 320 would be the similar.

the slk55 is upped to 382.

and for sheer silliness they can find 650 out of the SL65. Brabus manage 660bhp out of an SLR but thats using an non road legal exhaust.

most ECU companies will produce a chip upgrade that will enhance the power you have. do a google search for them. in the case of diesels, upgraded power doesn't affect the fuel consumption as much as petrol engines. . but they do use more fuel then standard.

My w210 E320cdi fitted with a Van Aakken box has returned 34.5mpg average over the last few thousand miles according to the computer bearing in mind i do mostly short trips, thats up from about 33mpg prior to fitting the box. That is a day in day out average

If we do a long trip at motorway speeds ie 70-90mph it returns around 38-42mpg I have had as much as 48mpg at 55mph on a run.

I am fairly heavy footed hence wanting the extra ponies in the first place up around 40hp over stock 198-243 i think, quite a difference in the 0-60 makes for rapid movement with an estate.

First run out in the 270 this morning. overslept so the traffic was much worse than normal. Used to get 31-33 out of the 240 on the same type of run. Computer is showing 39.4 so based on that, on a steady run to the Brum office, where the 240 used to show 36 I'm hoping to see high 40's.

I may be asking a very daft question here, but the extra 30bhp for a few hundred quid is tempting in the longer term but one thing bothers me, how did your insurance co react to the smartbox?

Its more than 30hp more like 45 and it didnt seem to affect the premuim although at the time i changed companies anyhow. I pay around £350 fc

I have a similar thing on my motorcycle again the insurers arent concerned IME they seem more concerned with internal engine modifications
