Why does my CLK320 Stop on a Hill?

I have a CLK 320 Auto box 1998 and my question is......when the gear lever is in drive and I am stationary, facing up a hill, why does the car NOT roll backwards? Is there something in the gear box which lock the gearbox up..
and no, I haven't got the brake on.

This is perfectly normal and shows your transmission is working ok. If it did roll backwards then the amount and speed of roll would show how much soft pad wear there is. But dont worry about it its ok.
