Why won't it start after a long run?

I have a 1992 230TE and after a long run it takes a lot of turning over to start the engine. If you stop for example on the motorway to go to the toilet, when you get back in it turns over fine, but will not catch. Starts fine i n the mornings in all weather.

Could you pop up a few more details about your car such as the first 6 number of the VIN.
In the meantime is it petrol, injected or carburated?
It sounds as if you've either got fuel evaporation as it stands whilst hot or a temperature sensor fault.

I've seen similar problems with old peugeot 405 and somw VWs with carburetters.

The car is injection. I have had the car a few years now, but it has only been doing it the last 6 months. Numbers WDB1240832

I was hoping that Malcom may have responded by now. I'm not entirely sure what the problem is but here's a few points to ask.

Do you get a petrol smell from the exhaust when it won't start? (This would indicate an ignition problem).

In case the fuel tank breather is partly blocked, causing a partial vacuum to prevent fuel flow, have you tried removing the fuel filler cap and starting it?

Does the application of the throttle have any effect in regards getting it started?

Sounds like a fuel starvation issue.

When was the fuel filter last replaced and did taking the fuel cap off make any difference, also have any dash lights come on recently and have you noticed any difference in engine performance.

Sorry, just read your notes again. Starts ok in the morning all weathers, then it must be an O2 sensor issue. Does it use a lot of fuel now or since you noticed this poor starting?

Suprised you haven't got any lights on the dash yet. Perhaps the dash is faulty too?

Does it have a crank angle sensor and if so then when was it last changed? I've noticed an increasing number of starting issues relating to these sensors that changing them out for new ones has fixed at not too expensive a cost. If yours has one then it may well help to get it changed? Just a thought.

Cheers,
Mark
