will a 609 fit a 310d

hello, i have a 310d s reg 2.9 which pumps out white smoke (like an eighties disco) under acceleration but still goes like a good`n and runs clear once i get upto 40ish. had diagnostics test, all ok, turbo ok, could be a cracked piston they said or ring. pressure test was low.others have said it would be missing and rattling a lot if it was a cracked piston/ring, which its not. said recon engine may be an idea as rest of van sound: about £2000 ish. it is burning oil and loosing some water (no puddles under the van though). now my mate the scrapman says i could have his 609 engine if it will fit in my 310d. of course there`s the 'scrap it' option but does anyone know whether a 609 engine will fit in a 310d? or could it be head gasket! or cracked head! or...

according to my autodata cd the 310 is a 2.9 and the 609 is a 4.0l engine..methinks big problems ..but I did put a V6 in a 2lt tranny once... the van ...not the vamp
