Thought it was a flat battery-charged up-still not sure about battery-but just makes a click-its an auto SLK -but it was all fine up & 'till I parked it up a couple of months ago-pls give us a few pointers!!!
I have a 1995 c280, & i had to have the RAC out today as engine would not turn over. Embarrissing outside B&Q. First thing he checked was starter motor & that was o.k. So technician reckons its either the ignition or the gearbox switch. Tech managed to short & get engine started & we managed to get home. Any ideas on which is more likely & cost to repair.
Thanks in advance
LeeBert

I can simulate it if I have not tighten the negative of the battery, you need a battery replacement as Cole said. Confirm it with an avometer. It should be at least 12.6V.
Beware of it should be so and so volts, if its not running the voltage depends on state of charge and temperature any where between 11v and 12.5ish means that there is some electrical power available. It is not advisable to discharge a lead acid below 1.8volts ((10.8volts for your 12v) per cell under any conditions.
If it aint the battery (after televisions head light test) it is likely to be the age old poor connection in one of the fat cables from battery to starter or battery to body/body to engine block.
This may be the cable tag and bolt not quite right loose/dirty or the cable to tag crimp corroded/dirty.
To locate it measure volts drop over each cable,
from
A/ the battery pos terminal proper to the starter and try the starter,
B/ the batt neg and the engine and try the starter,
lots of volts means that cable is dodgy, actualy almost any volts drop mean there is trouble brewing, expect on a good one less than 1/2-1v maximum.
If you are disconnecting the battery always take off the grounded side first (-ve for cars) and reconnect it last, this will prevent an accidental (spanner) short circuit on your battery with its attendant safety risks of burns, explosion and fire.
