Hi, I have a 1997 230 SLK which when hot will not tickover, it is going well, seems a bit thirsty, and seems ok when cold, but when its hot it will idle for about 10 seconds and then die, it starts straight away again, but if left to tickover it will die again...any idea's ?? thanks...

I dont think its MAF, it could be MAF if the MAF fitted isnt a genuine mercedes part, it has the characteristics of a china made MAF when they fail.

Hi Jib,, I do not know if it has one, but the MAF on my V70 stalls the engine at idle when faulty,,I have been using the car for 9 months now without one. Petrol cars use the MAF at idle and diesels do not

The MAF I tested on our SLK would stall the engine after 30 seconds of running on a cold engine, once warm tickover lasted 3 seconds, impossible to drive the car also. the earlier SLK had the MAF with the screw connector.

You could unplug it and see, the MAF are self adapting so the car will know it has a good one fitted.

Look at the MAF it should have a bosch number on it and a mercedes number if it doesnt then its a fake.

As I said mine is unplugged and runs OK.

Why is it there, its to set up the engine re the airflow and air temp.

Cheapest place for a genuine from a Bosch Service center at £147

Would a dodgy MAF cause a flat spot just off tickover?? the reason I ask is because I have just disconnected what I believe to be my MAF (which does not seem to have a Bosch or Mercedes number on it!!) and started the car, it idled smoothly and seemed to rev a bit cleaner, I have not driven it but I will tomorrow and see what it is like.
Thank you gentlemen.

Just a quick update....you chaps were spot on, new MAF fitted (genuine Merc) codes cleared, the tech also used his star machine to set it all up and........bingo I can't believe its the same car!!!
The old Maf was un-named the tech said it was a cheap pattern part.
So once again thank you.
