I would imagine you would at least need a GPS receiver (or antenna if the head unit has the receiver built in) , it presumably also needs some sort of display screen unless you only want voice directions .

I use the TomTom navigator 5 software built into my PalmOne Treo 650 which is my phone/pda and works in my car kit when driving but has the useful feature of being easily taken from one car to another or even used when walking.
