Has anyone fitted those smoked perspex wind deflectors to the front windows and/or roof, and if so are they worth having?

Had them on one of my Pajeras (shoguns), but that was early 90's.

They seem to like them in Japan, along with mirrors on the wings

just keep the windows up and the aircon on.
1. Aircon knackered. 2. I like to smoke while driving but only with the windows open. 3. I like the roof open but not being dazzled or getting wet. OK?

good a reason as any. I don't suppose the answer - give up and use the money saved to fix the aircon would go down well then!

Seriously, I've not seen any in the UK for a long time. I'm not even sure if you can still get them here. I think they were popular when aircon was hard to come by in the 70s and 80s.. Clearly it would increase noise and reduce economy but also, wouldn't it obscure your view of the door mirror? - I can't envisage how one would fit a W210.

Ha! I've only given up 3 times so far - the average is 11 times in a lifetime ...

The aircon only needs re-gassing (I sincerely hope), £40 at a local indy I know of here, which I just hadn't got round to before the heatwave a couple of weeks ago. There is a company called Climair which I think is German, www.climair.de/_engl/index.htm for details of the kit they supply. Stuff looks a bit 'added-on' ...

I've fitted wind deflectors to Volvo 940, 850 and V70 models, Volvo's own parts, which look the business and do a great job, even though they just stick over the door round the top & front of the windows, and don't obscure the door mirrors at all actually, and clamp down over the front of the sunroof. I was hoping to achieve the same for my M-B ...

I have one of the climair ones my my W210(96). It is essentially black tint adn serves teh purpose very well. The car came with it already installed so I left it on. Seems very simple to install, just 2 screws that run into the guide rail for the sun roof. It means that you can open the sunroof about 100mm/4" adn still be in shade. As regards rain protection, I'm sure it would do the same. Now there is a (not too loud) whistle sometimes in my W210 esp on teh motorway or in high wind and I strongly suspect that its from teh deflector, but it doesn't bother me too much, esp when I know what it is. The attached pics (just from teh phone) might give you some idea of what it looks like

BTW, when you are washing the car its a right pain trying to clean the area under the deflector and I don't know how well it would stand up to an auto brush wash

Wind deflector

I have a smoked plexiglas wind deflector which I have just taken off my W124 estate because it rather spoils the look of that model. I was intending to put it on e bay this w/e. It attaches by 3m type tape and hence causes no damage to fit or remove. It is in used, but good condition, and I will be supplying it with new tape. It does reduce wind when sunroof open and reduce rain a little, but does make it a little difficult to clean just in front of sunroof. It was taped such that there were two gaps to allow any water to run forwards after washing within, but these did add a little to wind noise. I would suggest it is fixed down all way round and you wipe behind it when cleaning the car. I can post picture and measurements by end of week if you are interested.

I am interested in this thread. I bought a pair of front defectors last year but didnot fit them after I found the usual rusty door trouble. I am now going to fit them....they have double sided adhesive tape that is continuous. No sun roof so can't comment on that one... Do the defelctors make much wind noise at say 80?

Yep, there is no doubt that it will add to the wind noise, but nothing like the wind noise you would experience with the windows down (even a little bit) at 80mph. My comment above was that I do get a whistling wind noise above 65 with everything closed which may be from the sun roof deflector.... but I havent taken it off to be certain that it is that.

With no wind deflectors fitted I get the whistling noise over about 50 m.p.h. in rain or fog - or even if I use the windscreen wash/wipe, so my theory is that it's moisture-related (and incurable!). I replaced the screen last year (it was cracked) and insisted on a genuine M-B screen (?Sekurit?) which was refitted twice, but still get whistling noise.

Thanks for your comments re w/defs., Climair is the one I was thinking of, they make a version specifically for the W210 and I'll probably go ahead and order a set.

Till then I'll just have to put up with ruffled hair! A/c on the blink - this weekend of all weekends! AAArrrggghhh!!!

Air con regassed, £45 & 1 hour later - relief !!

We found that the belt between the two electric fans in front of the rad was broken, meaning only one fan has been working, which perhaps explains why the temp has been creeping up towards 10 o'clock on the gauge on tickover or in traffic. Looks like a 'next-service' item unless anyone thinks I ought to get it seen to immediately ?
