Hi,

I've recently developed a problem on my 97 C180. The front passenger window won't go up. It happened last week for the first time and got stuck fully down. When pushing the button either way I could hear a click so I presumed the electrics were fine and that there was something physically stopping it. I tried pulling it up while the button was depressed, I aslo tried holding down the alarm button but neither closed it. I went for a spin and kept my finger on the button in the hope that it would work free. It did after about 2 minutes. It was working fine then till last night when it got stuck fully down again. Tried driving it again, no joy, gave up, went home and tried using the alarm box to close it. It worked. Same thing again this morning, the internal button only moves it down and I have to hold down the button on the remote box to close it. Thing is i'm confused. I thought when the switch unit goes you would have nothing, ie. The window wouldn't go up or down. I don't want to pay my local merc dealer the usual rip off fee, i'm happy to fix it myself but I don't want to get the wrong parts either.

Anyone got any ideas or had something similar ?

Thanks.

Try swopping the left and right front switches. If the fault follows the switch the switch is faulty. If the fault stays on the passenger side it's not the switch

The window works so it can only be the switch or an ECU that controls window operation. I don't know if there is any tricky electronics in that car or not

Just tried that but the LH and RH connections aren't interchangeable so I can't test it that way. I'm going to see if I can find somewhere that I could test with a different switch panel but has anyone got any other ideas. Can a switch be broken one way ?

Cheers.

Hi, can you hear the motor working in the door, the same thing happened on one of my rear doors and it turned out that the lifting cable from the motor had corroded through lack of use and snapped upon being activated; hope this helps.

Thanks Siverado...

I can hear the motor working so that sounds like it could be a likely fault.

How did you get in at the cable to check ?

I haven't got a Haynes manual and i've never removed the door panels

Hi, the job was done by the dealer just after I bought it but I watched the mechanic. He removed the door card by removing the doorpull surround, undoing a screw near the handle and pulling the trim away and upeards; I'm sure the procedure has been listed previously on this forum. The motor is held in place by two pop rivets which he drilled out and the motor frame and cable was removed. He said the cable couldn't be purchased alone and the whole replacement from MB was about £100; seperates may be available from other sources. He fitted the new bit inside the door and under the glass before fixing with two new rivets and replacing the door card. He made the job look straightforward and was sure to seal the inner plastic cover to stop any ingress. Hope this helps.

these motors must have a thermal or torque .cutout, in this case the guides have probably got wet or tight. I would not keep using it like it as the cuts do go as many people know and then it £80

Thanks for the responses guy's.

Just thinking about it though.....The window still goes up when I use the remote key..ie. Hold it down to lock the doors and close all windows and sunroof.

Surely if the cable was gone, the window wouldn't close no matter what ?
