Hi guys, today I was having lunch in my car and noticed a mark on my window i.e. drivers side. I thought it was a scratch and started to pick at it with my fingernails thinking it would peel off. However my window has suffered some kind of impact and it has come from the inside as I can feel the split with my fingers if I rub against the crack. It hasn't been impacted from the outside as I cannot feel the split if I rub my fingers on the window on the outside.

Now I know for a fact I haven't hit my window in any way, so does this suggest foul play? But then again if it was impacted from the inside then how can that be explained?

Is the scratch a straight vertical line?

I'd say it's at an angle. I'd get some photos for you but it's pitch black here in Luton.

Does your car have double glazing, I.E. Two thin pieces of glass with a plastic lamination in between? (S class have this) - it could be the inner pane has cracked, whilst it is still ok on the outer.

Has it been lifting slowly? Jerky? Could be mechanism issue has introduced a stress which has done it?
Probably covered by fully comp car insurance, (glass cover) will prob cost you £75 excess.

It's not double glazing. It might be laminated...but I would be surprised if it was on an Astra of this era.

It's a scratch not a split, as Stwat probably caused by someone's daughter getting naughty...

It has to be laminated otherwise it would have popped out in little bits.

With all the rust that I saw could the body have distorted.

S class
Most probably a wipe mark from a hand with a diamond ring, more commonly found on the inside of the windscreen.

Malcolm it's not laminated, it's a single piece of 3.1mm float glass... the only laminated glass on that car is the front windshield.

Large dogs can damage windows .I purchased a large volvo estate .The glass in the tailgate was danaged through a dog so the seller told me . He was a security guard dog handler, But i would say that a owner of a diamond ring was the culprit .

That's impossible as I only noticed it yesterday.
I wonder if someone has tried breaking into it and damaged the glass from the inside? Or maybe a stone has hit the side window? Or maybe someone has deliberately hit against it with something sharp?
They can be the only 3 possibilities.:?

Hi flyingspanner, no it is just ordinary glass. No double glazing. My 1998 W140 had double glazing so I know for a fact that the Astra doesn't.

Diamond ring scratch is the most immediately obvious of the lot. You said the car had a lady owner previous? Just one careless brush of the band against the glass would scratch it.
