Hi, further to yesterdays post. Having got to o/s rear window motor (220 ce) I partially seperated motor from regulator (winder?) when operated it tried to kick left and right in reponse to operating switch. Whatever the rod from the motor spindle goes into seems solid, (churned plastic???) I am unable to slide the motor out of the regulator. The window stopped operating some months ago when the locksmith who replaced the ignition barrel kept elbowing the window switch. ("What's that noise." - "You keep leaning on the window switch.") Are the motor and regulator seperate parts or do they come as one, assembled together?

About to remove backing plate from regulator to see if it can be stripped -seems to be held on with hex heads - but heavy rain has stopped play. If there's anyone out there all info gratefully recieved,

Mike (should I really have got rid of the Vauxhall Belmont?)

window motor bushes

Further to my post. Having seperated motor from regulator, which seems ok, bench tested motor. Now it's not working. Further inspection shows that the spring behind one of the bushes is inefective. Anyone replaced the bushes? If so from where were they sourced? I doubt MB do them as a seperate part.

I think that you will end up at a breaker, as no parts are available for these motors, the motors will be the same for all of the cars in you serries.

Thanks Malcolm,

I took the motor to an auto electrician who says it is almost certainly one of the bushes not making contact, push it in and it stays there. He is going to look through his spares to see if he can replace it. I will let you know how it goes

When I am stuck, I file down larger ones to fit, it is very soft carbon, makes a mess, but easy.

Takes me back to the days when things were 'repaired' rather than 'replaced', and keeping those carbon centre rods in old style torch batteries just for this purpose! This of course took time, a commodity which no-one seems to have nowadays (except you and I perhaps Malcolm) unfortunately.

Hi Tom,

Your last message really brought a smile to my face. Yesterday another 'repairer' and I discussed a number of options for replacing the spring on the brush ranging from a biro spring to the spring in a light switch. I went back to the auto electrician yesterday - he hadn't looked at it but doubted he could do anything, (not interested) so I will gratefully take you up on your offer and email you with my address. I too prefer to repair if at all possible. Keeps the grey cells working.

Cheers

Haven't done it recently but I used to use those carbon rods to make pickup brushes for motorcycle magnetos, as Malcolm says it's a messy job cutting them down but they worked perfectly and all the local bikers thought I was a magician reviving their dud mags.
How many of you know what a magneto is ?.:)

Do you know tom, the satisfaction got in years gone by was really something. during those times you could buy what ever you wanted from your lucas and Bosch dealer. They kept all of the dynamo bushes and brushes, all the jets for carbs. In spite of that one had to drive 8 miles to get them, so why not make them, and that's what we did. We ran around looking to see what could be broken up, or what contained the bit or material we needed. Good for the brain, good for the body, but nothing was as good as the feeling "I have made the piece" and of corse it was always better and quieter than before.

Talking about Magneto's I interviewewd the owner of Watford Clock Works who made the Watford magneto that were standard on pre war RR's back in 1975 just before he died, I have it on tape and was going to get it published but never got around to it. The best bit in the story is the pact that was signed between S SMITH & SON and LUCUS in the mid 20's The facts and the story is unknown to this day, but I have it all, I don't know what to do with it now, when Im gone it will be gone for ever.

Message received Mike, it's my old e-mail address on the forum and I've forgotten the password I used so can't get in to change it! (There must be a way).
The part on its way to you.
Cheers, Tom.

Watford Magnetos

I'd be interested in any information you might have about Watford Magnetos as my Great Uncle worked originally for Robert North & sons and then subsequent companies. His name was Alfred Allen.
