2006 E280 CDI - (Climate Control.)
Previous to the above I owned a Vauxhall Omega (Air Conditioning) and noticed on wet days (winter/summer) I had to run the air con to keep the interior from misting up. Thought this was just an "Omega thing" but the E280 does the same! Just wondering what the technical reason is as models without air con can demist the interior by turning up the fan speed and the heat! This doesn't seem to work in the E280 with the air con turned off!

The evaporator gets wet and then when the a/c is off it picks up all the mositure and dumps it into the car.

Even if you rarely use the a/c, all a/c equipped cars seem to mist up - our Honda Jazz, for instance, is quite bad, and in my C Class it always steams up in rain. I can only guess that rain that gets into the air intake perhaps some gets held on the evaporator, even though it's off, and then gets blown into the car.

I learnt with my previous car, turn the air con off and the windows mist up when it rains. So I never turn the air con off :)

Just don't turn off the aircon - ever.
On an E280cdi the aircon will make no difference to your fuel economy or performance, but turning it off will allow the seals to dry out and allow damp air into the car so there really isn't any benefit to turning it off.
MB recommend leaving it on anyway, which is why the light comes on when the aircon is off.
