My front windscreen wiper has just decided to move itself very slowly across the windscreen - particularly at the Apex of the swing. Very bad (as you would expect) the dryer the windscreen, not too aweful when the windscreen is very wet.

Does anyone know if this is a common problem that I can attempt to repair, or do I need to take it to a garage to fix/replace the mechanism?

Quite common, you will need to lubricate the wiper mechanism under the clamshell. Pls have a search on the forum as it has been covered a number of times, there are even pictures.

Thanks Blobcat....sorry I should have known there would be lots on this...some great threads!

Only difficulty I have (and I tried this in the dark outside last night) was getting the clam-shell off! Do you merely prise it of, or is there a fixing mechanism?

Mine is held on by clips on either side, so you have to pull the sides out then slide it up. Some have found theirs is held on with a screw from underneath, although I cannot remember which car that was.
Found a thread with some nice pictures posted by C220GJS; http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=20453
