Improperly mounted windshield can cause great wind noise, audible from within the cabin. Is that a fair statement? Improperly means the glass is mounted within the frame, but not as per factory spec... would 2-3mm make a difference? Perhaps a wind tunnel would tell. Anyway, just to check out if anyone has experience excessive wind noise after they replaced a smashed windshield.

The car is W124, 1991 230E.

Thanks.

If it is very badly fitted yes it will cause noise.
Check trim is fitted securly this might be your problem .

Take car to an independant garage and ask them to check it out

They use a sealant for the bonded windscreens and if a gap is left in this sealant (even a tiny one) the screen will "whistle" at motorway speeds.

It occasionally happens and the only answer is for the screen to be re-fitted. The windscreen fitter will do this for you if you complain.

I've just had a new screen fitted to a W124 yesterday - and there is a scratch on the glass right in the drivers line of vision. They are coming out this morning to try to polish it out, but if they can't, they said that they will replace the screen again.

Hi Azmi,

Mine is definitely leaking so seal has failed. Let me know how you get on with yours.

Azmi, are you American?

Hi there Impaler,

No, I am not an American, although I used to study in the states (Pennstate) for 4 years. Any reason why you asked?

BTW, I just replaced my radiator today. It was leaking pretty badly, and a recond work would cost higher than a new piece. So my 230E now runs cooler, cruising or in traffic :) What a joy! I can hear the engine thanking(?) me for the new BEHR radiator.

nite guys

Leaky business

Azmi,

I guess I wasn't the only one with a leak then. How much did the BEHR rad set you back?

Hi there,

Anyway, just FYI and other malaysians on the discussion list, my new radiator + service = RM670. And to service the old radiator, i was quoted RM800+!!

Exactly same size, and i assume the elements as well. Money well spent. I hope the radiator runs trouble-free for at least another 5 years.

I am still not happy with wind noise. I replaced the rubber and the trim fitting on the door frame, still, at 130KMH, my WiraMIVEC is quieter :(

I know i will nail this problem soon. Just too busy braiding DIY CAT5 speaker cable for my home audio listening.

Azmi, I thought you were American because you wrote "windshield", which is the word used in American English. The Brits say "windscreen" instead.

ahh, ok, i see why u asked. anyway, i noticed that this dicussion forum has one person, i dont remember who that person was, keeps correcting grammar :) ..

afterall, everyone is still learning one way or another.

latest news on my W124, traced a possibly shorted wire on the air flow sensor on the air flow enclosure. I reskinned the wire and i now feel the car has more power :) ... dunno it its psychological tho ...

anyway, i am still not happy with wind noise ....
